好像lawyer大多数人认为有贬义，律师喜欢自称attorney

Same thing in everyday usage.
The difference is that the term attorney is used in narrower way - somebody
legally empowered to represent another person, whereas the term lawyer can
be used more broadly to refer to anyone that can give legal advice and has
been trained in the law.
