I've finished a PhD in Biochem, and wanted to move on to law school with the hope of practicing IP as my future career. I think chances are good that I will get accepted into law schools. One of them offers full tuition waiver plus living stipend, which is renewable for 3 years contigent upon satisfactory academic performance. The other one comes from a top 14, which would cost at least $50K a year. The first one is Univ of San Diego, and I'm not quite sure about their ranking, I like their free
you had chances or you already got admitted. these are two different things. suppose it's the latter. anyway, beware of san diego. just read the news. UC system is falling apart. the few UC law schools will soon be the most expensive law schools in the world. it's highly likely some dramatic changes will be happening to them. so i'd be worried if they can keep their promise of a full ride even if you meet their stated condition.

hehe, USD is a private school, has nothing to do with the public UC system. right? I think LZ was saying University of San Diego, not UCSD

aahhh ::::o) --- my bad. disregard it then. then it's a real tough question. I'd go with the full ride. a t14 may not guarantee much in this economy or even in the future. and san diego is such a nice place.
Go to USD with free ride. 1)If you are committed to patent law, the fact that you are a PHD is more important than which law school you attend. 2)There are tons of life science patent work in San Diego. And you are a Bio person, which is a perfect fit. As a general rule, people should go to law school where potential employers are. If a Bio person like you go to Chicago, it will be very difficult to land a patent job as Midwest is EE's world.

Be careful with peencat's advice (not necessarily incorrect, but does not seem right in this economy and in light of the changing legal market). For IP, many large firms will have a separate, lower standard and focus more on your technical background. For example, several years ago, someone I know from law school got an IP offer from a Vault Top 10 law firm with average grades, while the same law firm has a GPA cutoff (for non-IP) around top 1/3 for my school. The prestige is not as important f

I had a similar choice last year, not same schools. My choice was to go to the free-ride school, because economic pressure is something really important to me personally. But it is your choice only---if you think the money is that important, then go for the scholarship. Otherwise, go for the prestige. I also want to add that my full-ride school is probably better in terms of ranking than USD. But, as previously said, USD is in the epicenter of biotech industry.

If you just want to do IP work and do not necessarily have to do it in a big firm, go to USD. With your background and location of the school, and if you perform decently well in 1L, you should be able to find a decent job. But if you have unlimited ambition and want to get into biglaw and want the sky to be your limit, go to T14. The problem with lower ranked school is that they have less access to prestigious firms. I know this from my experience.

Why do ppl think IP attorneys are inferior to some other attorneys? Are IP attorneys in non-big law absolutely not those people who want the sky to be their limit?

Higher hurdle leads to less competition. Language barrier does not matter as much as other areas of law.

Are IP attorneys in non-big law absolutely not those people who want the sky to be their limit? -- 不是那个意思。现在是在帮LZ分析回报和投资比例的问题。 只是说如果只想在中小所做IP,没必要担负债15W的风险。Of course some IP attorneys in non-big law want sky to be their limit. 只是说在大所,总体的发 展空间大一些。而排名低的学校进大所要难一些。 我自己两年内十有八九就会成为 IP Attorney。我从来没觉着 IP 律师比其他任何律师 差。
