I recently bought a house and have not moved in yet. Yesterday when I went
to the house, I found a note on the front door left by my next-door
neighbour:
"We forgot to take the fire place brass holder xxx (seller's son) promised.
If you don't want it, pleaes let use know before you get rid of it."
Although I don't plan to use the fire place, but the brass tool set and the
brass log hold bin look very nice and can be a good decoration to the living
room. I guess the seller asked them to help clean the house and may have
promised them that they can take some unwanted old stuffs. I know I can
ignore this note since after the closing date, everything in the house is
mine. But I also want to keep good relationship with my neighbour, they are
a retired couple and stay at home all day long, so they are a good 'watchdog
' of the community. What would you do in this case?

不过如果是我的话，自己不用我就给他们了

Yes, I think you should give it to them. The decision was made before you
moving in. Unless it is written in P&S that the fireplace tools should stay,
you are not entitled to ask for it.
A set of used fireplace tool is not worthwhile compared to a good start with
your neighbors, IMHO.

我会把东西给邻居送过去，顺便认识一下。
本来正常情况下，这些东西不会留下来，也不会是我的东西
我会看做对方老头老太落在我家里了，
不会把那些东西看成是我自己的。

I would return it right away. If you wanted to be sure, you can contact the
seller and find out who it belongs to.

When I talked to my co-workers about this, they tend to think that my
neighbour is being unreasonable, while people here seem to think the
opposite way. It's not worth it trying to contact the seller to confirm
whether he has promised it or not, I may just give it to them. Actually the
price for the brass tool set and the brass log bin can be $150 or more and
it does may the fire place area look better.

Sorry I misread. I thought the neighbor lent the holder to the previous
owner. Since it belongs to the previous owner who failed to deliver it to
the neighbor prior to closing, I think you can simply ignore the request.
The neighbor is being unreasonable.

愿意给就给
不想给就别给，也用不着说别人unreasonable
amazon上新的也就一百块钱左右，二手的估计也就卖个几十块，谁吃饱了撑的编个谎去
问别人家要东西啊，肯定是卖家答应过的呗。
不过是怕你们不喜欢当垃圾扔了所以和你们说一声，要是喜欢就自己留着，人家根本不
会care的。

I think they do care, otherwise, why would they ask someone they don't even
know for it? I was surprised to see that note only because I would not ask
for it even if the previous owner once promised. Anyway, I guess I will give
it to them although I really like the design of it.

只能说性格差很多了
对我来说问一声又没什么大不了的，不过就是怕别人直接把东西扔了（感觉很多人搬家后会把前人留下的自己又不想要的东西扔了吧，我这边很多人扔在curb上的东西其实都还看着挺好的呢）。别人要是不给我也无所谓的。换句话说，我并不是很care那样东西，但是我不喜欢浪费，觉得别人扔掉的话还不如给我。
像你这种想要也不会开口，但是一旦开口要了，别人不给，你是不是就觉得很不爽了？呵呵。
那对老夫妇怎么想的我就不知道了，我只是假设他们想的和我一样而已。当然你还是按照让你觉得舒服点儿的想法做就行了。

I don't want it to sound upsetting, but why you keep saying it is yours?
NO, it has NEVER been yours! it belongs to the previous owners, and they
gave it to their neighbor (who forgot to take it before you moving in).
Think it this way, if the previous owners had never made any promises, they
could have taken it away.
