Back-feeding is actually legal, as long as there is a break-before-make mechanism. The real widow maker is plugging into the dryer outlet. That's how it's traditionally done in America :) The needed cable is no longer available commercially, but you can putting a dryer cable and a generator cable together. The correct starting order is 1. Turn off the main switch and all breakers. 2. Plug the home-made cable into the dryer outlet. 3. Start the generator. 4. Selectively turn on and off the breakers. When the electricity is back, 1. Turn off all breakers. 2. Stop the generator. 3. Unplug the home-made. 4. Turn on main. 5. Turn on breakers one by one.

This is only for museum display. Don't do it at your home. It's illegal and will kill!

The dryer cable end is male, if you take it out, anything getting contact with it is zapped. And if you forget to turn off your main, like others already pointed out, a utility worker got killed at the light speed. No, your generator won't be able to power up the whole grid, but enough to kill one innocent worker.
The non-killing factor is, the required starting power of motors (in your fridge, well pump, sump pump, AC fans, etc.) is much larger than the nominal , so, if you don't start them one by one, boo! There goes your generator. It doesn't kill anybody, except the generator :)

I have never heard that a generator got blown due to starting power. First, there is always a fuse on the generator. Second, only long-term overloading will cause overheat and blow something. A blink overload will only drop the voltage. It's not good for the generator and other appliances, maybe damage something, but won't kill somebody. The only possibility to blow your generator is to forget disconnect it from the grid. When the grid is up, that can burn your generator in a second.

An interesting topic. If you google, a lot of such "killing" posts are by electricians, or no brainer follower. By this standard, gas range, furnace, driving, or even BBQ are actually more dangerous.

//shrug So we know yours got fancy protection, good for you. The standby generators usually can smartly shutting down some circuits to save the horsepower, but most portables can't do that. You are right, the duration of overloading is a more important factor, but frequency of overloading also play a role in shortening the lifetime.
