We will never win in their game. Because it is their game, where they set
the rules.
Their rules, in essence, are to gain access to jobs, promotions, funding and
contracts, etc etc through connections, rather than competence.
We need to play our game, our rules. Our rules are simple: competence wins,
in terms of job offers, promotions, funding starups and client contracts.
If the old money favors the old game, we should turn to new money; if the
new money becomes the old money, we should turn to the mass, the people, the
ultimate consumers.
In the end, we will win, when our game wins.
But when we still have to play their game, we need to play well. And the
best way to play the game is to break the game. Look how the people with
connections broke the supposed game of competence in the technology industry.
The only way to grow our competence, our only advantage, is through working
on high quality projects. And that is the real scarce resource in the
company. In order to access the resource, we need to play the game, namely,
office politics.
The alternative is job hopping, the much despised yet necessary path for
fast growth in competence.
The twisted reality is that one must be good at politics even though what he
wants is technical competence.
The only right thing to do is to twist it back, hacking through the system
of reputation and connections. In short, fake it and make it. Like I said,
the best way to play the game is to break the game. And people with
connections rather than competence have done that to us already.
