We are currently operating a NSF grant with one PI and two co-PIs. One of
the co-pi was brought in when we were ready to submit the proposal. We are
funded and now enter year two. We realize that this co-PI is not capable of
conducting his assigned role. Communication does not help because the issue
is about he does not have the credential required. Under such a circumstance
, we are thinking to replace him with another person who has the credential.
Is this allowed or is it impossible to change a co-pi? Any feedback is
appreciated!

Because the person did not do what he supposed to do. He thinks co-PI does
not work under PI so we can't force him do things...

理论上来讲PI是项目负责人，他有支配经费的全权，可以一分钱都不给那个co-PI。不
过一旦这样做了，就等于完全撕破脸，给自己树了一个敌人，看看值不值得了。

Thank you for your feedback! I think the relationship is already messed up.
This person wants us to keep writing papers and put his name on the papers
without any intellectual input. We cannot keep him in the project anymore.
We are planning to work with the PO to solve the issue, just want to know if
this is doable...

as far as i know, many co-pis did not contribute much to the project, either
because the PI wants to do everything by him/herself and have full control
over the grant, or because the Co-PI is not interested in the proposed
research (some PI wrote the entire proposal and add Co-PIs in the proposal
in order to get funding). I have not seem anyone kicking out Co-PIs or
changing Co-PIs in such cases. They just dont put Co-PI's name in papers he
/she did not contribute.

You need to document his performance in your project. Otherwise you may be
in trouble.

If I have evidences documented, and if the PO back up my decision, would I
still be in trouble?

In principle, the pi can kick copi out. Rarely done due to obvious reasons.
But there is definitely no obligation, in fact it is immoral to put people
's name on papers they have no contribution.

Thank you Johnw! I talked to my PO today and he supports my decision. I will
move forward to communicate with the Co-PI. I have another question, would
my institution not support my action of withdrawing a Co-PI and remove my
role as the PI away from the project? Is it possible?
