Papers get you a phone screen, at best. Networking include your boss', senior postdoc, alumnus, intern connections, conference acquaintance, somebody you met in pickup games, or bar.... A phone call from your boss would go a long way...

你说的是大牛吧 一般老板哪有这个面子。我们实验室原来的都去industry。可是现在pharma/biotech就 是没有opening阿~~ 你说一个fresh phd怎么beat someone with 2+years of industry experience.... 除了证明自己非常有scientific background,很有潜力, 还能怎么样? 说到netwroking,除非你跟hiring manger本人或者higher level熟识,其他都是虚的 运气这些东西都是out of your control,我申请的两个大公司,面完后,职位被砍了。 。。 这些自己都不能掌握的东西拿出来说,我觉得就是在抬杠。我们只能做自己能做的,而 且唯一能做的就是提高自己。

我怎么觉得你在抬杠 :) Besides what I have mentioned, networking gets you many job openings that you would have never heard of otherwise. Many job openings, industry and academic, are never even advertised. In industry job, a strong referral carries lot of weight and makes company and hiring managers feel much more comfortable than somebody out of blue. BTW, paper, networking, communication and language skills are not mutually exclusive :)

这个说的很中肯 不过我觉得最难得还是现在职位都要2+业界经验/////就算到了HM手里,怎么beat those guys with more experience.....I asked someone and he said "unless you are exceptional"//////所以自己实力才是王道 可惜我明白地太晚了,前几年每周试验不超过5个小时,混混混。。。。

Just realized that you didn't even have postdoc experience and didn't really work hard in your PhD either. Hate to say this, the odds are really against you to get 工业界 research job, especially in this economy. One option is to try technician job or out of this field if your school is a good one. I know some UC fresh Phd joining consulting, investing or law firm.

........exactly true.......I probably just don't deserve it.... But I worked hard this year, 3 published, 1 submited, 1 in prep. all first author, decent journal in my field. so we will see about it~~~ As for other fileds, not in my list at all. I know exactly how much it takes , say, Mck consulting. Not for girls, absolutely, not.....

another cow girl or what?...clearly u are a very smart/capable and very confident gal....nonetheless, based on ur chats so far, if I may say anything too confident/self-righteous could be as bad as not confident at all...never underestimate that how much time/experience could teach one no matter how smart one is...Good luck!

u got the point, rip right through it... I had a very impressive lesson a couple months ago which I will never forget ... Others comfort me "it takes a couple screw-ups to make it right..." I learned a lot from the past year.... Yes, time/experience are invaluable. I just hope I still have time/ a chance to make it right.

Sure, there are always exceptional cases. I know one case that a famous biotech company went out of way to recruit and made an offer to a PhD candidate from a UC school almost one year ahead of graduation, because her research experience is in chemical biology/genomics and small molecule drug screening. This just happened to be in a hot area, not necessary a norm.
why not? You can work for Mck for two years then jump to some less demanding place.

~16 hrs per day workload....how many wrinkles would develop after working like this for a year...and what's the chance u could survie. Perfect blueprint, but not practical for common people let alone the 4 rounds of screening...

Don't be silly and showcase your naiveness. Networking does not simply mean you have one person to forward your CV. It means you have powerful and influential people to recommend you. Network is not easy and it does take time and energy.
just curious how did you survive your class? you hate programming so much, how u communicate other ppl in this program? I like this one "编程做计算还不如在家生孩子。。" I like 编程做计算, especially after seeing my wife suffering from delivering , I think I like 编程做计算 more. hiahia~~~~

Hehe, believe it or not, people like you are on the list of not hiring. Too much ego, stubborn, sentimental, and would not listen to different opinions. Anyway, good luck to you. You are really excellent in your area, just your personality is a little strong. You may offend people in a team work environment. I have seen too many times that company does not hire the smartest guy, but the tender mediocre person.

其实 R&D 里 Research 占的比例远小于 Development,尤其是大一些的公司。以前 phd的时候还没意识到这一点。其实,不用换行业,机会还是有很多的。。。
I'm curious what kind of "communication" did you get with them. if it's just a conversation after a talk, they may be just playing their parts as speakers. IMHO, they are too busy to be your friends or mentors. If they invest their time on you, they want to see profit -- not necessary for them. so you need to clearly show that their time has made a difference for you, and you are worth their attention. just my 2 cents
it's just their need are Thanks a lot for your insights! I got their contacts after talks. As you said, I think they probably just wanna fulfill their roles as speakers. It's really difficult, in my opinion, to show them my improvements after their inputs through online channels. When I have such a chance, I just try to ask smart and specific questions to the best of my ability. Would you mind sharing your experience in this kind of communication? Really appreciate that.
