Many discussions here for systems biology are often based on personal feeling, further, many of people here did not read anything about systems biology, purely based on personal feelings, which can't be objective and comprehensive. This Cell issue covers more comprehensive review about this field, it is better to read them to know what is going on and what is the next.

In a broader sense, systems biology is to study biology at systems level. What does system defines? It saids that, based on my understanding, is a level up from single molecules or pathways. The research model has to be at least at single living cell, that means you read out the results of whole cell response no matter what input has been given. There are many approaches of studying systems biology, please don't confuse with definition of systems biology, such as computational approaches, tranditional wet lab high throuput approaches or conbionation of them and so on. Main thing of systems biology is to understand the biology at systems level from single living cell to a cell complex or organ. MIT is the first institute in the world that established a ph.d program for systems biology. The professors at this program are Peter sorger, Douglas A. Lauffenburger and etc. Sorger moved to harvard systems biology department because of some political issues. There are many good guys in MIT who established their lab for at least partially studying systems biology.
