The famous school of medicine was founded perhaps by people trained in the Spanish medical schools; it is
certain that, as early as 1137, there were excellent physicians at Montpellier. The school of medicine owed
its success to a policy of the Guilhem lords of Montpellier, by which any licensed physician might lecture
there: with no fixed limit to the number of teachers, lectures multiplied, and there was a great choice of
teachers. The statutes given in 1220 by Cardinal Conrad von Urach, legate of Pope Honorius III, which were
confirmed and extended in 1240, placed this school under the direction of the Bishop of Maguelonne, but
the school enjoyed a great deal of de facto autonomy. In 1529, after some years as an apothecary,
Nostradamus entered the University of Montpellier to study for a doctorate in medicine. He was expelled
shortly afterwards when it was discovered that he had been an apothecary, a "manual trade" expressly
banned by the university statutes.[8] The expulsion document (BIU Montpellier, Register S 2 folio 87) still
exists in the faculty library. Rabelais took his medical degree at Montpellier, and his portrait hangs among
the gallery of professors.

Leonardo da Vinci at Le Clos Lucé (1516-1519)
In 1515, Francis I won the Milan area in the battle of Marignan, and invited Leonardo to come to France. The
following year, the artist arrived at the Chateau du Clos Lucé after a journey across the Alps on mule-back.
He brought with him three paintings: the Mona Lisa, Saint John the Baptist, and The Virgin and Child with
Saint Anne. Leonardo was named as “The King’s First Painter, Engineer and Architect”, and received a
pension of 1000 gold crowns per year. In 1519, the artist died at Le Clos Lucé at the age of 67.

The spiral (or more accurately helical) staircase is often used as a space
saving device, but why are helices found so often in nature, in shells, the
horns of mountain goats, in DNA and in many other molecules found in the
cells of living creatures? Perhaps because they are nature’s space savers;
in the dense environment of the cell, long molecular chains frequently adopt
ordered helical conformations to enable information to be tightly packed.
More than 400 years before the discovery of DNA's structure, the double
helix was employed in the grand staircase of Chambord, begun 1519 and
probably designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The double helix allowed the king to
share the staircase with others, but avoid having to meet his servants.
More recent applications allow more people to be evacuated down the same
stairwell space.

Leonardo the visionary
Civil and military engineering
As an inventor and an engineer, military engineering was one of Leonardo da Vinci’s favourite areas of
interest. During the wars between the Italian republics, he offered his skills to future patrons, notably
Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. He invented the three-rack multi-directional machine gun, the swing bridge
and the tank. Inspired by his reading, research carried out by engineers from Siena, and a scientific and
technical tradition dating back to the Middle Ages and Antiquity, Leonardo systematized knowledge and
introduced innovation through the power of his inventiveness. He used new materials like steel, or
developed ball bearings to reduce friction. Visitors will be able to experiment with his inventions,
manoeuvring his tank in the park, as well as his paddle boat, his fan-type machine gun and his Archimedes
screw, or by walking across all sorts of bridges that he invented.
Architecture and town planning
Leonardo also dreamed of an ideal city, with buildings and streets on different levels, and waste water
disposal systems. In the Parc Leonardo da Vinci, visitors can explore the plan for a functioning city designed
for Ludovico il Moro, in 1485. Around thirty years later, Leonardo worked towards Francis I’s ambition to
make Romorantin the capital of France, and to construct a “beautiful, grand and sumptuous edifice” in the
Sologne forests. This uncompleted challenge demonstrates the immense range of Leonardo’s talents.
