The new Google Maps for iOS (free, App Store) just landed and it has native
iPad support for the first time. In additional to supporting the iPad's
larger screen, the new version of Google Maps includes live traffic and road
incident reports. The new version of Maps also offers indoor directions and
maps for malls, airports, transit stations, and more.
According to MacRumors Google Maps 2.0 for iOS does not include on-the-fly
rerouting (like it does on Android), but Google has said that it plans to
add the feature in the future.
Here's the full changelog of the new features in v2.0:
New design for iPad
Enhanced navigation including live traffic updates and incident reports&
#8232;
Explore: A new way to browse and discover popular local places to eat,
drink, shop, play and sleep
Simple 5-star ratings and reviews from friends, plus expert Zagat
content
Great deals from your favorite brands with Google Offers
Indoor maps with walking directions for malls, transit stations,
airports and more
No word yet on whether the new traffic and incident report features are
coming from Google's acquisition of Waze in June, but it's unlikley that
Google could have integrated that functionality so quickly.
The update is being rolled out gradually over the next 24 hours, so if you
don’t see it in the App Store yet, check back soon. I was able to download
it immediately on my iPad mini and iPhone 5.
UPDATE: gMaps iOS 2.0 also includes a hidden offline map mode. While the
feature hasn't been fully implemented, a blog post by Google Maps Director
Daniel Graf reveals how it works. Typing "ok maps" in the search box will
save the visible map to your device. A definite nod to the new "ok" syntax
in both Google Glass and the upcoming Moto X handset.
