My personal opinion (at least in the US): My training from Ph.D. to post-
doc are in two completely different areas. I have a Ph.D. in chemistry and
did my post-doc in a molecular biology lab. My currently lab, I can do
chemical synthesis to molecular biology and all the way to xenograft and per
-clinical toxicology without significant help from other laboratories. What
does this mean? I don't have to share the 250k (if you are lucky), R01
with another lab which will likely take about half of that. With budget
cuts, you need to make sure whatever your post-doc training will help you
getting grants in the future, which I think multidisciplinary approach in
training is the future.
Also, most importantly you want to make sure your post-doc adviser knows how
to write grants (I got lucky, my post-doc adviser is a very good grant
writer (2-3 R01 through out his career) and seeing how he organizes grant is
very helpful. I believe as a post-doc today, you need to set two goals.
One is paper, paper, and paper, and another is trying to get K00 within 2-3
years (I know it is hard, but I hope your advisers at least sit down and
talk to you about it).

I would said I learned how to run and not run a lab when I was a graduate
student. Experimental techniques, I combined both of my graduate and post-
doc experiences together. My current project although is an extension of my
post-doctoral work, it is very far from my post-doc project (i.e. different
diseases and different molecular targets). Try to find a niche in science,
NIH is less likely to fund you if someone is already working on the same
idea.
