Talking about switching field. If you consider yourself a star PhD student, jump into another field as far as possible. If you consider yourself a outstanding PhD student, stay in the big filed, switch the methodology, model, or sub-field. If you consider yourself a good PhD student, stay in the sub-field, switch the methodology or model. Do not switch into some field just because there is hot money, or the sub- field is hot now. There is no guarantee that it will be still hot when you apply your AP or when you want your tenure.

ajwook is much more dramatic than this ,hehe Two friends of mine, both great scientists in my mind, changed fields for postdoc One from mouse neurodevelopment to worm genetics one from neuro cell biology to mitochondria biochem sorry no chinese input here.
none of them go from rice to mouse.... check Bingwei Lu @ Stanford. Patato biochem -> Fly genetics

Just ask youself what can you contriubte to the post-doc lab from your Ph.D. , and what you can learn from the lab at the same time.

even for a lab in a totally different field, he/she can contribute a totally different angle of reasoning and perspective. that is good enough for most big labs

I think big labs want smart people, because they can provide everything else.

Lawrence C. Katz 48岁 去了 不然 还在的话 20xx年的炸药生理奖 的某几位获得者 要悲催
整个论文 可能让 LCK 等人的某论文 占了那一年的最佳论文奖喽 Katz was not directly related to Nobel laureate and fellow neurobiologist Bernard Katz.[3] Larry Katz died of melanoma at the age of only 48. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_C._Katz
赞 层次很清楚 有个疑问,如何定义big field,sub-field和methodology,可否举个例子? 觉得比较难以把握这个尺度,就怕跨越太大导致不能很快pick up
