I love Dwarf Alberta Spruce, as there are so many deer in New England and they so love shrubs. NO PLANT is deer proof, but Dwarf Alberta Spruce stands the best chance. Tried arb several times, some of which even had a great run for years. And then a bad winter cames, hungry deer found your hidden treasure, period. Neighbors got the same experience. The saddest story is a row of established arbs. Builder put them in for show, and successfully fooled my poor neighbor. Then over a few winters, deer reduced them to skeletons. So, stay away from Arbs, if deer is ever spotted in your neighborhood. Even if you successfully protected it from deer for years, it only takes one mistake to ruin it completely.

You can prune both down to the right size. Doesn't take much work as both are slow growers.
