The easiest way to determine the correct scale or mode is to
find the scale or scales which contain that chord. For example,
if you want to solo over a Dm7 chord, you will notice that the
Dm7 appears in several different scales. It is in the Dorian
Mode in the C Major scale, the Phrygian in the Bb Major Scale,
the Aeolian in the F Major scale, the Dorian #4 in the A Harmonic
Minor and Dorian b2 in the C Jazz Melodic Minor. Any of these
scales will work over Dm7.(看到这的时候我很兴奋,呵呵). It all
depends on the sound that you prefer. The choice is yours. (然后
到这,心就凉了一半). you may stay on one scale or mode or go from
one to another.
If you have a progression, Dm7 to Eb Major for example, there
would now be a harmonic preference for the Bb Major scale, since
both the Dm7 and the Eb Major chord appear in the key of Bb Major.
Dm7 to G7 would suggest the C Major Scale, or the C Jazz Melodic
Minor, since these are the only two scales which contain both of
these chords. Dm7 to Gm7 would suggest the F Major Scale for the
same reason.
Major chords work well with the Ionian or Lydian Modes, the
Lydian #2 from the Harmonic Minor Scale and certain Pentatonic
Scales.
For an F Major 7 chord, for example, you could use the F Major
Scale(Ionian Mode), the C Major Scale(F Lydian Mode) or Lydian #2
from the Harmonic Minor Scale.
