Knowing "字母数字" indicates that he has normal cognitive skill, or may do a good job academically. But the core deficit in an ASD kid is communication skills and social skills. Not being able to communicate basic needs and feeling is a big problem.

Does he point to the food he likes, and look back at you, indicating he wants you to bring the food to him? Does he bring shoes to you when he wants to go outside? If he needs your help, can he tell you that with gestures?
LZ, you really should not worry about your son's speech and language. Rather , you should worry about his COMMUNICATION SKILLS. Before a child learns to speak, he should be able to communicate non-verbally, using facial expressions, gestures, pointing, sigh language, pictures, etc. He may also bring you an item to show interest or curiosity. If he lacks such skills, he will have increased frustration, leading to a lot of crying and tantrums. Other parents have comforted you, saying that their children are also late talkers, but they turn out fine. But you don't really know how these kids communicate non-verbally. A delay in speech is easier to deal with, and a child may catch up on his own. On the other hand, a delay in communication skill needs to be taken much more seriously, and needs to be addressed with early intervention. I am saying this because my son used to have similar problems, but early intervention has helped him a lot. He still has a speech delay, but is constantly making progress.
Because you know what's on your son's mind. You know he can communicate with you non-verbally. Your experience doesn't necessarily translate to LZ's case.

each kid is different ah. you don't really know her kid ah.
If your son can express himself through gestures, facial expressions and eye -gaze, he is sending you a message, and you can understand what he needs and how he feels. That's called non-verbal communication. By doing so, he gets his needs met. He won't have to cry when he wants to go outside, or throw a tantrum on the kitchen floor when he is hungry.

a pediatric psychologist may be worth a second opinion as well. we ever saw a well-known pediatric neurologist, yet she draw some conclusion totally opposite to what a research psychologist did. This forces us to learn different opinions from experts, and dig into how they came to a conclusion. In time, we have confidence in who is better than another, although all of them are experts. Do NOT trust pediatrician too much. Most, if not all, of them are not qualified in ASD assessing at all.
