如果你是一个受过基本教育的白人，你会为你的祖先而自豪吗？ 我想，我会。
三百年来，他们为后代子孙开疆拓土，科技文化引领世界，军事冲突所向披靡。很多人
说，这种用暴力为后代获得的生存空间，有什么值得鼓吹的，我认为这种政治正确性只
存在于言辞中的白人和自我安慰的少数族裔 ！
一百多年的文化积累，让很多东西深入骨髓。 你不可能期望这种优越感，以及由此衍
生的一个群体对其他群体的偏见突然消失。其实今天它们仍来无处不在，存在在好莱坞
大片中，存在于
文学作品中，表面的自制在危机面前会显得无比脆弱。 到今天中国人张嘴就能说出我
们祖先留下东夷、南蛮、西戎、北狄，知道里面的偏见，可是谁能否认偏见对大部分人
的影响。 所以你怎么指望西方人忘记他们的‘《西游记》’，忘记他们的’《三国演
义》”，这些书今天的美国人会读，一百年后的美国人也会读，你是american
american 要读，你是chinese american 也需要读。
《伟大盖茨比》在很多书单中被列为美国第一小说，我想任何在美国接受中学教育的
人都会读过，可是多少人细细看过里面一些有意思的片段呢。 下面是《伟大盖茨比》
中几个主人公聚会的一段闲聊，不想过分解读将近100年前的一本小说，只是好奇今天
这些出生在美国，成长在美国的二代华人，在高中阅读课上和同学讨论起这些片段来是
什么的一种感受。
“Civilization’s going to pieces,” broke out Tom violently. “I’ve gotten
to be a terrible pessimist about things. Have you read ‘The Rise of the
Colored Empires’ by this man Goddard?”
“Why, no,” I answered, rather surprised by his tone.
“Well, it’s a fine book, and everybody ought to read it. The idea is if we
don’t look out the white race will be — will be utterly submerged. It’s
all scientific stuff; it’s been proved.”
“Tom’s getting very profound,” said Daisy, with an expression of
unthoughtful sadness. “He reads deep books with long words in them. What
was that word we ——”
“Well, these books are all scientific,” insisted Tom, glancing at her
impatiently. “This fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us,
who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have
control of things.”
“We’ve got to beat them down,” whispered Daisy, winking ferociously
toward the fervent sun.
“You ought to live in California —” began Miss Baker, but Tom interrupted
her by shifting heavily in his chair.
“This idea is that we’re Nordics. I am, and you are, and you are, and ——
” After an infinitesimal hesitation he included Daisy with a slight nod,
and she winked at me again. “— And we’ve produced all the things that go
to make civilization — oh, science and art, and all that. Do you see?”
受好奇感的驱使，发现对话中提到的一本书，确实是有现实原型，文中提到的Goddard
是Madison Grant （1865－1937）和Lothrop Stoddard（1883－1950）两个名字的合体
，二者均为白人血统优势论坚定鼓吹者，其中后者写了小说中提到的那本 “The
Rising Tide of
Color Against White World-Supremacy‘，在网上可以下载到，读来让人后脊冒冷汗
啊。这里再引用一段这个作者写的另一本书里的摘录：
“We want above all things to preserve America. But "America," as we have
already seen, is not a mere geographical expression; it is a nation, whose
foundations were laid over three hundred years ago by Anglo-Saxon Nordics,
and whose nationhood is due almost exclusively to people of North European
stock—not only the old colonists and their descendants but also many
millions of North Europeans who have entered the country since colonial
times and who have for the most part been thoroughly assimilated. Despite
the recent influx of alien elements, therefore, the American people is still
predominantly a blend of closely related North European strains, and the
fabric of American life is fundamentally their creation
