Just did. This is the first Gao Xingjian I read, can't say that I appreciate the style. Compared to previous fictions I'd read in New Yorker, it seems somewhat primitive. How do you feel?

Seems to me it was part of a longer novel. New Yorker does this a lot -- e.g. Jeffery Eugenides' << Middlesex >> published 3 selections on it over the past 3(?) years, before the whole book came out last year. The slowness may be exaggerated in the translation, since Western readers expect an exotic, relaxed style from the Orient. A novel does not have to have a lot of plot and/or character. 原作是有一点暗寓时代的意思。比如中国长大的读者,一看high-heeled shoes, gently kissed her的细节,就知道故事是发生在文革末期以后。高氏笔下simply being happy的 感情立刻就有了历史背景—新婚夫妇不绷紧阶级斗争的弦,也不会被当成资产阶级情调批 判了。 咱的印象里读那时的作品,好像社会上下都有一种无名的happiness。舒婷 《会唱歌的鸢尾花》里面有“当我们悄悄对视/灵魂像一片画展中的田野/一涡儿一涡儿阳 光”,跟这篇小说开头“We were deliriously happy, delirious with the hope, infatuation, tenderness, and warmth that go with a honeymoon.”正是异曲同工。 改革开放后面,对社会种种问题,大家就没那么高兴sober起来了。 不过你老板这么微言大义,explicit的解释有点上纲上线。问问她是不是对奥威尔的《动 物农场》情有独钟。
