Worry is of no help. That is what my manager (he is from TW, and with
another asic indian manager, are the only managers to go )told me
when the rumor was around our building. Decision has been made long
before in high management. My feeling is, if your business unit is not
in the key area of the whole company, if the unit doesnot have much
revenue and profit, if the rumor begins, polish your resume and take
a look at those job search websites.
When the director told us the decision last friday,

u r cool, two days to get a new job, this is a record.
yeah, decisions have been made long time before laying-off, most directors
have a list of 1st round cut and 2nd round cut, and VPs have a list of those
managers and directors. they got prepared. rumors at bad time usually will
turn out to be truth. somehow we also need to get prepared and get visible
during bad times. indian folks are pretty much good/experienced with this.
that's maybe a part of life in the sillcon valley, at least some vet

status is the biggest concern for us immigrant workers, hopefully INS can
get something out pretty quick, given the pressure of IT industry. they
certain want to keep those skilled cheap labor anyway, the problem is
INS is a big slow a**h**e and recently buried with LIFE act processings.
for some people, to be laid off is a nice relax chance, like 6 months' package,
1 year excercisable stock options, man, it is like a paid long vacation.

cisco seems the most generous, our compnay only give 4 weeks salary to
those stayed here for 5 yrs, 6 weeks for 6 yrs, and 26 weeks for 7yrs.
qualcomm gives 6 weeks no matter how long you stay.
I feel american colleagues donot care too much of laidoff, they can
search another job without hurry. Of cuz my colleagues have pay off the house.

I think mid size company is the best now. If they have had lay off, they
wouldn't do more lay off like big company has 1st round, 2nd round ....
since they don't have much left for company surviving. If they will have
2nd lay off, they would probly be closed.

wouldn't be affected much by the market, it should be safe fo
