The Black Men’s Initiative (BMI)
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Black Male Advancement, the Black Men’s Initiative (BMI) Program Manager will focus on designing, evaluating, and overseeing implementation of the BMI. Inspired by My Brother’s Keeper, which serves boys and emerging adults, the BMI serves Black men by working to dismantle societal, economic, and educational barriers.
This role lives in the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet. Please read below to understand our larger vision.
Equity & Inclusion Cabinet Mission
The mission of the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet is to ensure that every resident has fair access to City resources and opportunities. We achieve this by embedding equity and inclusion into our current City practices, building our collective capacity on issues of racial and social justice, and fostering a more welcoming and accessible city.
The departments in the Equity and Inclusion Cabinet take an anti-poverty approach to their work, focusing on the following areas:
- Improving outcomes for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color) communities, in particular immigrants, women, and LGBTQ+ residents.
- Increasing access for people with disabilities and those who speak a language other than English.
- Eliminating barriers to fair housing and human rights.
Position
Black Men's Initiative Program Manager
Qualifications
At least four (4) years of full time, or equivalent part-time, experience in public administration, community organizing, human services, or related field.
Bachelor’s degree in public or business administration, social sciences, social services or related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
Commitment to the department’s mission.
Excellent interpersonal skills,oral, written and verbal skills.
Detail-oriented, excellent organizational skills.
Ability to plan workflow and multi-task.
Ability to organize and inspire cooperation and collaboration.
Experience in group facilitation and organizing.
Experience in organizing forums, conferences and events.
Ability to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge of the Black male constituency across Boston.
Bilingual a plus, but not required. (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese and Vietnamese).
Proficiency with Microsoft applications and Google Suite.
Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
Roles and Responsibilities
Develops, establishes, and collects key performance indicators to evaluate BMI programs and initiatives.
Develops thorough and detailed community education plans and strategies to promote the BMI programs and priorities.
Manages the implementation of BMI’s community outreach and engagement initiatives.
Manages the development of collateral materials and project messaging to promote BMI programs and priorities.
Supports Request for Proposals (RFP) process when relevant, by assisting with proposal outline, approach, scope of work etc.
Prepares and delivers presentations on BMI services as needed; this will require evenings and weekend participation.
Attends events, meetings, resources fairs, and press conferences as needed.
Responsible for conceptualizing, developing information about BMI programs and policies to groups with differing levels of professional and lay understanding.
Develops and implements programs and activities that inform the public about the policies, programs, and services the BMI offers.
Create and provide developmental training, workshops and educational programs.
Documents, monitors and reports outreach and education data, assessing efforts to identify gaps and recommends activities, initiatives, procedures or protocol for improving efficiency and outcomes.
Works collaboratively with the Black Male Advancement team as needed and required.
Provides intake support when needed.
Performs related work as required.
