The 1783 Treaty of Paris: America’s Future on the Brink

Time: Tue, 10/11 13:15 pm

Presented by Richard Bell, Professor of History, University of Maryland. Signed in 1783, the Treaty of Paris ended the War for Independence and created the United States of America. Delegates from the United States, Great Britain, and France pushed and pulled to secure every advantage. The Treaty of Paris was a triumph for US diplomacy, securing rights to all land east of the Mississippi River, important fishing rights, and the restoration of property and prisoners of war. The Treaty reset relations with Britain and set a new border with Spanish North America. The treaty also damaged the US-French alliance irreparably and left Natives, loyalists, and fugitives from American slavery to fend for themselves.

Registration is required for this event.

Voices on the Green

A Live Music & Storytelling Series

Time: Fri, 10/14, 7:00 pm

Location: First Parish in Lexington

7 Harrington Road, Lexington

Voices on the Green, Lexington’s premier live storytelling and music event at First Parish in Lexington, will return on Friday, October 14,  at 7:00 pm with our first live performance since the pandemic darkened our stage.

Appropriately, the theme for this show reflects not the frustration and isolation of the last two years but the optimism of our recovery: Silver Linings. Within each of the evening’s stories there is an unexpected discovery, reflection, renewal, transformation, or joy.

Our storytellers reflect the diversity of our community—a high school junior, a practicing physician, a celebrated poet, a retired educator and musician, a life coach, a radio producer; their stories—funny, poignant, resilient, puzzling, hopeful, and even triumphant—reflect the variety of our experience.

Beverages and conversation are available before the show and at intermission. Don’t miss “Silver Linings,” at First Parish in Lexington, 7 Harrington Road in Lexington.  – Tickets are $10 and $20 and are available NOW on the VOTG website.

Help Plan the Future of Lexington's Open Spaces and Recreation Areas

Lexington has slightly over 1,400 acres of town-owned conservation open space areas. These open space areas are considered permanently protected under Article 97 of the State Constitution to protect environmentally sensitive and habitat areas, and to provide for public passive recreational opportunities as well as climate resiliency.

Lexington is updating it's 2015 Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP). As we embark on the update, we invite you to join the planning process and share your thoughts. Results will be used to identify goals and objectives for Lexington’s Open Space for the next 7 years!

Please respond to the survey by October 31.
