2022-2023 Grant Cycle Begins

The 2022-2023 grant cycle for the Lexington Council for the Arts (LCA), a Town of Lexington Committee, has begun. All applications must be submitted online through the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) website by October 17, 2022. Individuals, agencies, schools, nonprofits, and other organizations may apply for grants that enhance the cultural vitality of the Lexington community. Applications are evaluated in terms of artistic or creative merit; benefit to the cultural life of Lexington; project design; qualifications, dedication and accomplishments of the individuals and organizations involved; accessibility of the program and of facilities being used; community involvement; and financial need.

The Lexington Pops Chorus

Open Rehearsals

Time: Two Tuesdays

9/6 and 9/13 7:30 pm

Location: Clark Hall, Hancock Church 1912 Mass Ave, Lexington

The Lexington Pops Chorus is holding non-audition, open rehearsals for potential new members. 

Two free open rehearsals will be held Tuesdays, September 6th and 13th, at 7:30 pm. Singers must be able to read music and stand for performances.

Now beginning its 41st year, the chorus enjoys the enthusiasm of members from over 15 area towns. We sing a wide variety of music, including classical, Broadway, jazz, folk and gospel.

The Lexington Pops Chorus is a member of The Boston Choral Consortium. We look forward to welcoming you!

2022 Herb Festival

Date: Saturday, September 10th

The second annual Herb Fest, organized by the Lexington Historical Society and Lexington Field & Garden Club, showcases the Society’s two beautiful herb gardens. At Buckman Tavern, home to the Helen Noyes Webster and Mary Milligan Memorial Herb Garden, sample and purchase items that integrate herbs and spices into foods, soaps, home décor and much more! Learn about the uses of herbs in food preservation and medicine from Historical Society staff and about the history of tea cultivation and ceremonies from members of CAAL (Chinese American Association of Lexington). Vendors include AMH Soap (natural soaps with herbal inclusions), Anisoptera Mercantile (CBD products, teas and coffees), Gumption Elixir Company (beverage syrup mixers), Humanity Henna (henna tattoos), SarahDipitous Crafts (candles and prints), and The Queen of Spice (Moroccan spice mixes and flavored salts).

The Hancock-Clarke House Herb Garden will be presented as an educational garden, with Garden Club members sharing the history of 18th-century herbs from the garden’s three sections – culinary, medicinal, and aromatic. View images of the Herb Garden since 2010; crafts made using herbs from the garden; and an extensive collection of books on herbs and how to use them. Herb-based recipes will be available to take home and try! Lexington Historical Society will also share the history of 18th century western herbal medicine, herbal alternatives to tea during the American Revolution, and natural dyes and inks, as well as offering a decoupage craft to take home!

Chinese Brush Painting

Flowers and Birds with Qingxiong Ma 

Time: 8 Mondays

The instructor, Qingxiong Ma considers the brush-stroke the essence and the language of Chinese Painting. And though ever mindful of the tradition of his training, he has found his own expression with his brush. In his landscapes, he uses ink and gouache in many layers to give the painting texture and depth, and sometimes paint on both sides of the absorbent rice paper. He calls this technique “Heavily-Colored Free-Hand Chinese Painting”. 

This course will introduce the basics of Chinese brush painting. Students will explore birds and flowers with a combination of Chinese brush painting and Western techniques. Using freehand brushwork, the emphasis will be on expressiveness, individual interpretation and abstraction through exaggeration.

Students will use ink, watercolor, and gouache on rice paper to create wonderful visual effects.

Presented by Gresh Lattimore, Cpt, USN, retired. The Battle of Gettysburg proved to be the turning point in the American Civil War.  It didn’t start out that way. By 1863, this clash of the Northern and Confederate forces was inevitable, but the way it occurred, and where it occurred, were the result of a series of coincidences. The South did not regard Gettysburg as a pivotal encounter and, after the battle, northern voices severely criticized General Meade for allowing General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia to escape intact. It was only in the aftermath of the battle that it became clear to the South that there would be no European intervention, and their hopes of winning the war and establishing a separate nation were greatly diminished. 

Climate Change with Quentin Prideaux

Lexington Field and Garden Club Presents “ Climate Change”

Quentin Prideaux has a degree in Physics, an MBA, and a Masters in Sustainability from Harvard University Extension School. He became interested in climate change in the 1990s and began giving talks in 2012. He is President of Sustainable Wellesley, an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that engages residents, businesses, and the Town of Wellesley to take sustainable actions to protect the climate. Quentin’s presentation will cover the impacts and causes of climate change, the actions needed to make a difference, and what climate change means for Massachusetts and the Northeast. He will also discuss some of the issues that cause confusion about the science behind climate change.

Purchasing an AAPI 5K T-shirt, to fundraise for the new water station at Minuteman Bikeway!

The Minuteman Bikeway is one of the most enjoyable places for residents for healthy recreation activities, including bicycling, walking, and running. However, no water fountain is provided in the Arlington–Lexington section of the path. 

Chinese American Association of Lexington (CAAL) is partnering with Lexington HEY Runners Club to raise funds to establish a water fountain. Join us to make the Minuteman Bikeway a better summer-friendly place!!

iPhone Tips & Tricks with Nicole Mordecai

Nicole Mordecai is a photographer based in Weston, MA and a member of the LexArt Photography Guild. She creates art photography including images of reflections and nature. Prior to taking up photography, Nicole had a long career in the software industry and was awarded 7 US patents.

In this class, you will discover many of the "hidden features" in your iPhone camera that you may not be aware of.  You will also learn some helpful photo editing techniques using built-in iPhone tools. In order to practice your new skills, you will be given some fun photography challenges in photo-taking, organizing, and editing. 

Participants will need an iPhone to participate in the class.

Rock the Lot!

This fun family event will feature a Rockabye Beats Concert, Local Authors Storytime featuring Josh Funk, Heather Lang, Hannah Voskul and Maya Tatsukawa, Giant Bubbles with Mr. Vinny the Bubbles Guy, fantastic crafts and special guest characters! The Friends of Cary Library also will be offering a terrific selection of gently used children's books for purchase. 

Is all this activity making you hungry? A wide array of yummy food will be available for purchase from food trucks from The Chicken N Rice Guys and Clyde's Cupcakes.

This program is designed for adults and seniors to learn table tennis skills and stay fit. Table tennis helps improve hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and balance. Class starts with 10 minutes of warm-up, followed by practicing racket grips and basic strokes for 30 minutes. The class will end with single/double games.

Our First Civil War: Patriots and Loyalists in the American Revolution by H.W. Brands

The American Revolution is not a classic story about good and evil. Rather, it is a messy saga that pitted father against son, brother against sister, and neighbor against neighbor. In this civil war, the unlikeliest of rebels – people like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin – chose the side of revolution, while other, equally unlikely candidates remained steadfast to the Crown. H.W. Brands’s new book explores the emotional turmoil that came with such a revolution in a story that Nathaniel Philbrick says “speaks compellingly to our current age of division and discord.”
