Lexington History Hunt 

Time: Tue, 11/1 afternoon to collect the questionnaire 

Location: Cary Memorial Library Children's

 Room or the Visitors Center

How Well Do You Know Your Town?

For the first time, Town Celebrations Committee (TCC) is holding a Lexington History Hunt on the many ways our town has served our country. 

Pick up the questionnaire at Cary Library Children's Room or the Visitors Center Nov 1, afternoon; answer as many of the questions as you can; and submit your response by Nov 10, 4 PM, to Cary Library Children's Room or Visitors Center. The Town Celebrations Committee will announce those who had the most correct answers at the Veteran’s Day Ceremony on Nov.11. This is event is designed for ages 8-12.

Veterans Get Together Breakfast! 

Time: Sat, 11/5 

8:30 – 10:30 am 

Location: Knights of Columbus Heritage Hall, 177 Bedford St, Lexington

All Lexington/Bedford veterans are invited for breakfast sponsored by the Town Celebrations Committee and the Knights of Columbus. There will be photo-ops with service flags; great food and camaraderie. 

Joan Clifford, Director of the Bedford VA, will be our speaker. Vets are our honored guests; donations of $10 for non-vets are appreciated,

Tickets are available at the Community Center, Michelson’s, and Bedford Town Hall.

If you know any ones who served in any nations’ militaries, please let them know they are welcome to the events on both 11/5 and 11/11.

Rejuvenation: The 9th Annual Art Exhibit of the Korean Cultural Society of Boston

LexArt is again honored to host an art show convened by the Korean Cultural Society of Boston (KCSB). The theme is "Rejuvenation". The show features works from nineteen artists ranging from traditional representations Korean art and culture as well as contemporary interpretations.

Join us for the Annual Battlegreen Run, LexSEPAC / SEPTA fundraiser! 

Time: Sun, 11/6 In-person event 

Sun, 11/6 to Sat 11/12 Virtual walk or run with a week to support 

Last year our team raised over $3700 for LexSEPTA -- please help us break the record this year! 

The Battlegreen Run fundraiser benefits us in two ways:

- Team members can optionally raise funds that go directly to LexSEPTA. To raise funds for our team, when you sign up, select the "Team Fundraiser" option, and then select "Become a Fundraiser" to create your own fundraising page. Be sure to join our team fundraiser by choosing the "LexSEPTA" team fundraiser.

- The Battlegreen Run Foundation donates race proceeds to our organization after the run, based on the number of team participants. So even if you don't directly raise funds, being part of our team still helps! 

If you choose not to walk or run, you can still make a donation to LexSEPAC / SEPTA on behalf of our team.

Discover New/Old Organic Techniques & Practices that Make Your Garden Shine

Kelly Orzel is a small-scale organic farmer, author, and speaker, living in coastal Maine. Over the past 20 years, she has worked as a horticulturist on a 70-acre farm, dabbled in plant biotechnology, earned a Master's in Horticulture, is a Maine Master Gardener and has run her own herb farm. Who doesn’t want a chemical-free garden full of fresh fruits and vegetables, deeply aromatic herbs, and bright, beautiful flowers? She will discuss some simple growing techniques and her favorite organic fertilizers. She will also share some vegetable patch and plant bed designs, as well as how to prepare your soil and growing strategies to ensure an abundant, multi-season harvest. We look forward to seeing you!

Reforming the Utility Business Model for Resilient Reliable Renewables

Mark Sandeen, Lexington Select Board and Audrey Shulman, Co-founder and President of Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET) talk about utility reform and how we can move toward a greener, more resilient grid.

You’ll learn: 

#1 how utilities could lead the way to renewable energy powering the grid.

#2 Green our heating and cooling in an equitable way, without straining our electric grid or raising our energy bills. 

To get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 we need to act today! This event will explore how we get there.

Veteran's Day Ceremony in Battin Hall

Time: Fri, 11/11 11am 

Location: Cary Memorial Building, 1605 Massachusetts Ave

On November 11, the town will hold a ceremony at Grace Chapel Sanctuary, starting at 11:00 am. Sheila Widnall, former Secretary of the Air Force and MIT Emeritus Professor of Aeronautics and Aerodynamics, will deliver the keynote address. The Lexington Minute Men and Lexington Scouts will lead the processional, teens will read their essays, and Lexington High School Band will perform traditional service songs. For the first time, we will hold a Lexington History Hunt for youth, and those who submitted the most correct responses will be announced.

Chinese Intelligence Programs and the U.S. Response

Time: Mon, 11/14  1:15 – 3:00 pm

This program is a hybrid program - you can attend in person or watch via Zoom. 

The Chinese Communist Party is launching an intensive intelligence campaign throughout the US and internationally as part of its goal to overtake the US as the preeminent global power. The focus of this effort is an influence campaign, designed to produce legislation, business decisions, and public opinion favorable to China. Ed Barr, retired Army intelligence expert with FBI and CIA experience, will explain how this influence campaign works and just how successful it has been.

Edward J. Barr’s background spans the intelligence, legal, international business, and military sectors. He departed the CIA for private practice and soon after September 11, 2001, he was recalled to active duty in the Marine Corps. Barr served throughout Southeast Asia and the Middle East and was the U.S. Central Command’s senior counterintelligence and human intelligence officer, responsible for intelligence operations in 27 countries. He has served as a subject matter expert (SME) on “insider threat” projects for the Department of Defense as well as serving with FBI Tampa Division’s Foreign Counterintelligence Squad.

Science Café, Making the Long Dream of Fusion Energy a Reality Now

Science Café is pleased to welcome MIT Professor Dennis Whyte, Director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Professor Whyte has paved an innovative and faster path to producing fusion energy, which promises to be a clean, safe and virtually limitless energy source. He leads the fusion project SPARC — a compact, high-field net fusion energy fusion device — in collaboration with the private fusion startup Commonwealth Fusion Systems.

About Dennis Whyte:

Professor Whyte is a recognized leader in fusion research, especially in the magnetic confinement of plasmas, Whyte has paved an innovative and faster path to producing fusion energy. He leads the fusion project, SPARC — a compact, high-field, net fusion energy fusion device — in collaboration with private fusion startup Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). In 2018 Whyte received The Fusion Power Associates (FPA) Board of Directors Leadership Award which is given annually to individuals who have shown outstanding leadership qualities in accelerating the development of fusion. Whyte earned a BS from the University of Saskatchewan, and an MS and PhD from Université du Québec.

Fall Ducks at Arlington Reservoir 

Time: Sat, 11/19  9:00 – 11:00 am 

Location: meet in the reservoir’s new lot on Lowell St, Lexington

Join local birder John Andrews to explore the autumn variety of ducks and other waterfowl that may be found at the Arlington Reservoir, which straddles the Arlington/Lexington border. In addition to migrant duck species, there may be migrant sparrows to find at the pond’s border with LexFarm. More than light rain will cancel the walk.

Let’s Bike! 

The Friends of Lexington Bikeways is a non-profit volunteer organization that promotes and supports biking and the shared use of bicycle routes in and around Lexington, Massachusetts. 

We meet regularly with the Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee on the second Thursday of each month.  Meetings are open to the public, and all are welcome.
