Dante’s View

Mesquite Sand Dunes

Stark, open, free,
Harsh, tender, otherworldly
— the desert opened up to me.

這令我想起“The English Patient“ by Michael Ondaatje。

The arid beauty of the desert always leads to my memories of my late grandfather and his stories of the Sahara.
I was just a bright-eyed teenage girl, listening to him, swallowing his words like water.

Two quotes from the book:
“The desert could not be claimed or owned–it was a piece of cloth carried by winds, never held down by stones, and given a hundred shifting names... Its caravans, those strange rambling feasts and cultures, left nothing behind, not an ember. All of us, even those with European homes and children in the distance, wished to remove the clothing of our countries. It was a place of faith. We disappeared into landscape.”

“I’ll be looking at the moon, but I’ll be seeing you.”

I looked at the moon, and all I could think of was my grandfather. I stood still. I missed him terribly. For this moment, this one moment, he was with me. The rest of the world simply faded away. On this warm, windless night, this desert in the soft afterglow was absolutely tranquil and ethereal. I have come to a deeper, more soulful beauty.
