从去年8月开始到现在，两个学期。
昨天系头找俺谈话关于年度总结和评价。
TEACHING 没想到居然相当的高。
上学期教一本科课程。最后给成绩的时候有几个小孩总跟我ARGUE，最后还闹到系里。
不过最后这帮孩子给我TEACHING 的评价居然到了4.8/5。系头说他还没见过谁第一年教
本科生有这么高的分数。几分汗水，几分收获。为了让这帮小屁孩明白俺教的，俺着实
也是费尽心机了。
RESEARCH 没想到居然这么的难。
到这个学校来主要就是看俺的RESEARCH BACKGROUND。这一年目前为止就中了两片领域
内比较好的CONFERENCE。带一个本科上PHD的学生，从IDEA到建模到仿真到写作无一处
不操心。希望这个暑假之后他能完成两片JOURANAL吧。
费劲巴力完成了自己人生第一个NSF PROPOSAL，最近知道被拒了。虽然系头看了PANEL
REVIEW RATING 之后说这是一个很好的开端。。。可还是觉得要FUNDING实在希望渺茫
。看那些REVIEWER的评语，有些实在中肯，有些觉得根本就没有意义。居然说我以前没
有被NSF SUPPORT过，无法判定我的主持项目的

I got a 74 on BEC! Can I appeal in Georgia? The NASBA website says Georgia
doesn't have the appeal services, but I want to ask to make sure!

本质上就是个WORD PRESS 网站.估计这哥们是专门建网站卖的.他还有很多其他网站.
比如 http://brushmix.com, 都是一类套路, 他的数据比较可疑:
1. ALEXA RANK 74,939, 但是COMPLETE RANK是500K, QUANTCAST RANK是600K.
2. Domain Registration Date, 2010-01-12 and 2010-04-23
还有这个网站维护成本太高, 需要不停的写高质量的帖子, 估计不久就会没有动力的.
收入数据没法确认. 如果是不需要维护, 收入数据是真的, 那还可以考虑.

Comfort - I would suggest you move on. It doesnot worth the time and money -

是 wordpress，维护成本确实太高，新 owner 必须不断提供新内容，而且内容水平不
能低于现有内容。如果是一个 auto pilot 的网站, 内容靠程序自动生成，内容也不会
高，而且不是 unique 的内容。两者似乎很难找到好的平衡点啊。

如果像brushmix 那样鼓励大家提交新 brush, 内容倒是能不断 grow,
像这样 wordpress based 的网站如何最大化的实现盈利呢？

没有研究过wordpress 网的赢利. http://brushmix.com 开付费的会员下载专区的问题在于, 内容是大家提供的, 但是下载却要收钱.
一般这类网站先要解决鸡和蛋的问题, 有了流量后才能想收费.
http://www.clker.com/ 都是免费的, 流量就很好. 应该能赚不少.

俺觉得发现panel review的意见很有意义基本上只是个开端。到一定程度就觉得review
基本上是胡说八道。不过senior faculty说那是因为proposal和别人的相比比较差，但
是reviewer又找不出拒的理由。反正结论是一定就对了。
俺倒是早就知道自己想做什么。但是花了一两年时间认清了走这个方向注定没有财路的
事实。倒是经常做梦拿到了funding，还接受了采访。

啥都是概率，方向问题只是降低了拿到funding的概率。是不是能拿到tenure需要的钱
还得看运气。俺现在是认认真真写10个才中一个，而且这个概率还未必能保持住。唉，
太失败了。。。

前年我的评语有2个简直是让我感到耻辱,真不想做发考题了,有一个倒是很支持,结果当
然是没中,却在未中的里面排名很高,学校鼓励我再试
去年受鼓舞,精心修改,评语很好,学校科研处的人说评语比这差的都能拿到,结果却是失
败,而且排名很低,唯一能解释的是投错panel了,怪谁?我自己,耍小聪明,跨别人学科里
了,人家不买账

continue to make improvement. Once you are up for tenure review, your

Another point,
You might want to recruit some Ph.D. students who had their graduate
training from good and reputable Chinese universities (check their
references directly by talking with their advisors). They can start your
research projects right away. But one of the caveats is that you have to
write papers for them.

In academia, the game is "publish or perish", not just funding. If you do
not large grants, but as long as you publish to meet the required number of
papers set in your department, your chance for a tenure is better than one
with a large funding but not enough papers.

Of course, unpublished before. However, your advisor/supervisor might want
to be the author for correspondence. But if you can add extra work in the
paper, both of you can be the corresponding authors. Many times, they may
give up on it and let you be the sole corresponding author. However, you
have to be very convincing and get their blessing and they should understand
it since they were there before.

建议很好! 学习了.
几点看法: 1)你的导师是不能帮你写 TENURE 信的.
2)最好少和你的导师合作, 要么 P &Ｔ会觉得你
ＩＤＥＰＥＮＤＥＮＴ　有问题．
３）ＦＵＮＤＩＮＧ　重要还是ＰＵＢＬＩＣＡＴＩＯＮ　重要，　要看学
校，　不能一概而论．

我找工作的时候列出来的idea，现在看都是忽悠。自己都不知道究竟怎么做。所以我是
第一年什么都没做，第二年写了几个idea 不成熟的proposal,全部死翘翘。现在又开始
绞尽脑汁打算career了。好在下学期靠着几个senior弄了个state project，否则到了
第三年还是分文皆无，真是要过不下去了。

Both my Ph.D. and Postdoc advisors wrote supporting letters for my tenure.
In my case, I provided a number of names (15) to my department head who
solicited letters from them. It appeared that there was no restrictions in
my case.

也感谢大家的讨论和分享。
关于让学生暑假写两篇JOURNAL的问题，澄清一下。
其实大部分东西是在做POST-DOC时候完成的。
只是让学生从模型出发自己开发一下仿真程序。
而且我还有一套现成的供他参考。
再多说两句吧。
发现带学生也是真难。
东西写出来从头到尾都得改一遍。
加上讨论和回答问题的时间。
数倍于自己写了。
FACULTY真不是个轻省活。
在公司里头干完了活回家就不用想太多了。
做FACULTY就是吃饭睡觉，上班下班无时不愁。
TEACHING, RESEARCH, PUBLICATION, SERVICE...

I used to work in a largest biotech company as a senior scientist, but I
chose to return to the public sector. Even though there have been lots of
hoops that I have to jump, I would not go back to the similar or higher
position in the industry. As it says: the grass on the other side of the
fence is greener. Good luck!

申请头几笔funding的时候最靠人脉了. 没有人脉的,即使project很好,reviewer
也会说对申请者本人没有信心,不能确定他/她是否能够完成这个project.
或者就鸡蛋里挑骨头,找点毛病把proposal据掉了.
如果人脉广就不一样了. 我认识一个人, 他第一年申请的都中了, 看过reviewer的评论
以后发现都是熟人做的review. 当然都是好话了. 一方面夸这个proposal有多好,
一方面夸申请者多强,有信心他/她能够很好的完成这个project.
所以在精炼proposal的同时, 搞搞人脉还是有用的.

人脉好真的能搞到钱？都说同行是怨家，人脉再好，在钱的面前大家都不会轻易放手的
；熟人做review是否有competing interest?

你要这么想，reviewers跟你熟，潜意识里对你有好感，也许评论
起来就不那么苛刻。还有，这次把钱给你了，下次总不能还是你的，他是不是
就有机会了。虽然reviewer应该是保密的，你会发现你拿了钱以后有的人会
自动跟你打招呼唉你那个proposal是我review了一下下，言下之意下次论我的
你也得照顾点。要是你没拿到钱，没人会如此暴露身份的。
同行是冤家，所以更得小心，刚开始最好谁也别得罪，虽然很难。proposal
这个事情，关系尤其重要。要以为美国不靠关系吃饭那就错大了。

这么多年我的结论是assholes all on the street，你说是不是都是
当年junior的时候被欺负的自己senior就变态了。老跟自己说虚怀若谷虚怀若谷，
但是还是老会为这些鸟人动怒...
