Yes, a great suggestion. I have actually just sent a message to my American
classmate for help.
BTW, could you give me an idea for syntax final paper? I know you are great
in syntax. I am still struggling for an idea, although the paper is due in 2
to 3 weeks. :)

我的paper也还没开始写呢,只是交了proposal和article review
其实我学syntax还不到一年呢,所知也很有限
这个很难有大的建议,只能是你有一个idea以后大家帮着参考一些细节
你比较喜欢做哪个方向的东西?
比如binding theory, A-movement, A'-movement, 等等

BTW, in a handout of my professor, he wants to demonstrate that extraction of subjects from certain islands is far worse than extraction of objects. He has the following example:
*[CP who_i did [IP John hear [NP claims [CP t'_i that [IP t_i burnt this book ]]]]]
How do you explain the movement of who from t_i to t'_i, mang hiong? I don't understand. Please.

A Wh-word must move to SpecCP.
In this sentence, "who" is generated in the SpecVP headed by "burn", moves to
SpecIP to get NOM, and then moves to SpecCP headed by "that".
The piont is that you must know the "purpose" of the movement. e.g. A-movement
is about Case, A'-movement is about something else.

Yes, that makes sense. Thanks.
Quite often the text book refers to positions like [Spec CP] or [Spec IP].
Do they mean the following?
CP
/ \
Spec
or
IP
/ \
Spec
Thanks. Don't laugh.

In the same handout, he also has:
(1) [CP who_i did [IP John read [NP a book [CP that [IP t_i criticized ]]]]]
instead of
(2) [CP who_i did [IP John read [NP a book [CP t'_i that [IP t_i criticized ]]]]]
Perhaps (2) is intended?
What do you think?

Well, it'll depend on what your professor wants to show.
Basically the movement takes place locally first.
