Bull, good, and big lab, you will need your own funding to join. I
advertise because I want someone with good publication to apply especially
for a relatively new PI with funding. And it is true, these days you will
find very good candidate out of over 100 applications...and 90% of them are
from India.

This is for all the graduate students in case you PI never told you (he/she
should told you)! First you need to look for post-doc two years (minimum 1
year) before graduation and contact the PI to ask for possible co-writing a
fellowship (writing based on his research etc.) There are also post-doc
funding that does not restrict to which lab you can go, but you have to
write it with the help of your PI before you graduate. Btw, some of the lab
will still take you (if the fellowship is submitted), but you only get a
year contract.

Many labs look at your publication to see whether you have a good chance to
get a fellowship. After they give you an offer, they give you some initial
results, write a proposal, submit to multiple foundations you before you
actually join the lab. That's why majority of people in Niu lab have a
fellowship.

I do have money to recruit post-docs but I'm not doing so because most of
the post-doc are simply trying to use PIs as stepping stones for something
else. I understand why people want to move on to other professions, but I
don't appreciate those who simply take advantage of PIs. I had someone in
the lab who was paid 8 hours a day but was in the lab only for 3 hrs a day -
she came in at 9 in the morning, set up PCR, then decided to disappear
between 10- am - 4 PM, and left the lab at 6:30 PM. When I modestly
suggested that we need some data to renew the grant, she flared up. The next
day she started sending me notes: I got into the lab at 9, and left at 6:30
. I overworked for 1.5 hours everyday. Later I found she was studying for
her board test for 4 months when she was disappearing. She claimed I was
exploiting her. In reality I was being exploited!
So when I have money, I do not hire. I use cores and services as much as
possible. They ask me to pay only for what they do for me. If they go and
study for board test, I do not have to pay for their time studying the tests!

As long as she does her work, why can't she study for her board exams? She
uses the PCR running time to study, is there anything wrong with it? I think
the kind of advisor who think their students should work without break are
just too mean.

One RT-PCR a day? I don't think that kind of productivity is good enough
for any research. He is either a very nice PI or to embarrassed to warn his
post-doc (I see post-doc cutting their own throats everyday). For example,
my Ph.D. adviser didn't get tenure because he tolerates such behavior in
his lab. It will also effect other people's willingness to work. All the
right to work states, you can fire a post-doc with a two weeks warning
regardless of reason unless institution has a different policy (btw,
California is one of them).
PS. Post-doc is a salary position. How many hours that you are working is
pointless. However, the research better get done (usually work longer than
8 hours).

,我就不回了; 想申請他們實驗室的,發信問,要求帶funding去的實驗室直接略過,
不帶這麼要求的,沒錢還招什麼人呢?
