I am not in CA's law school. I have a classmate who is. Never heard about
this---though I am not unusually ignorant about many such topics. I kind of
doubt it is an exam after one year because not all the required courses are
taken during your first year. I think it may be an early registration so that
you can save some fees...like what happens in Illinois bar exam, if I am right
about that.
Anyway, most people take the bar exam in the summer before starting working
and I don't believe their opp

What is "1L bar exam"? I think all you need to do is to register with CA bar
and take the finals at your own school. Never heard about that exam.

But you must register within 90 days after you start law school, otherwise
you'll be charged some late fees or may not be able to take the bar exam if
it's too late.

1st year bar exam is required for those without a law degree.
