My laptop was stolen 2 weeks ago, and it was found today. The public safety
of my university didn't give me any information about the thief.
The guy formatted my laptop and re-installed windows XP on it. All data and
software were gone.
My friend suggests me to sue him. Is that doable? How much money can I get
from this lawsuit?

BTW: I bought a laptop of $1800 from compusa right after the theft. Can that
be included in my loss?

Check state law of your state. In Massachusetts, where damage is less than
$5,000, no discovery is allowed. If your state has similar rule, then how can
you win without discovery?
Include the cost of new laptop for now to see if you can reach the minimal
damage in order to have discovery, by which you can request him to produce the
record about the laptop in his possesion.
