大四找工作时,赶上坏年景,我作为外地女生,留京尤其不易。我爸放下清高,全力托
人,在某中直机关为我找到工作,还是个能常出国的工作。留京有着落了,但我却没太
高兴,倒对读研心动。我妈很反对,说女孩子学历不能太高云云。这时候,我读了刘震
云的小说"单位",又读了首弗罗斯特的诗,"The Road Not Taken"(见过这版有人提
到)。
"单位"写新毕业的大学生小林面对机关里的琐碎和世俗-分东西、入党,提拔,互相
算计,庸俗丑陋和无奈。我读了,对单位心生厌恶, 不想做女小林或女老乔,只想离那
个世界越远越好。Frost的诗正相反,说在树林里,遭遇岔路,犹豫后,选了条别人不
大走的路,从此有了不一样的人生。 哎, 说到我心里去了: 年轻时的我, 就是不愿
意和大家一样。于是做了决定,放弃那个得来不易的工作,继续读书。
回头看, 我即使没读到那两篇东西,应该也会做那样的选择。只是它们叫我的选择更明
朗坚定。读研的日子很快乐, 至今我喜欢那个选择。但后来,我走的, 其实还是和大家
一样的路,所谓未能免俗。
弗罗斯特的诗不长,抄在这里. 后面附找到的译文和我自己尝试的翻译.
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

深黄的林子里有两条岔开的路,
很遗憾,我,一个过路人,
没法同时踏上两条征途,
伫立好久,我向一条路远远望去,
直到它打弯,视线被灌木丛挡住。
于是我选了另一条,不比那条差,
也许我还能说出更好的理由,
因为它绿草茸茸,等待人去践踏——
其实讲到留下了来往的足迹,
两条路,说不上差别有多大。
那天早晨,有两条路,相差无几,
都埋在还没被踩过的落叶底下。
啊,我把那第一条路留给另一天!
可我知道,一条路又接上另一条,
将来能否重回旧地,这就难言。
隔了多少岁月,流逝了多少时光,
我将叹一口气,提起当年的旧事:
林子里有两条路,朝着两个方向,
而我——我走上一条更少人迹的路,
于是带来完全不同的一番景象。"
和其它凑成每句字数相同,打油诗一样的译文比,这个方平翻的还可接受。但有的
字也没忠实于原来的意思,比如把travel both翻成"踏上两条征途",不知'征途'是
不是革命文学特有的措辞,给原诗硬加了本没有的豪迈。"绿草茸茸"虽然好听,但林
子都黄了,草可能不会是绿茸茸的。另外,"隔了多少岁月,流逝了多少时光"这样的
派比,好象有点太煽情,而原诗这句的口气很平和。
我也瞎翻一下。因为原诗很朴素,就尽量直译,顾及一点押韵 -欢迎诗人和非诗人们帮
着改:
没有走的路
金黄的树林分出两条岔路,
遗憾我无法分身, 不能两条都走。
我伫立许久,
向一条路尽头望去,
直到它转弯,被草木遮住。
然后,我选了另一条路,其实一样。
我选了那条,
只因它草叶茂盛,象在等人踏上。
但看践踏的痕迹,
两条路其实很象。
那天早晨,两条同样的路躺在我面前,
覆盖的落叶都没因践踏变色。
唉,我把头一条路留给以后吧!
但我知道,路路相连,愈行愈远,
我怀疑我是否还能回来。
很久很久以后,在某个地方,
我将叹着气和人讲起,
树林里分出两条路,而我 -
而我走上人迹较少的一条,
从此一切不再一样。
我刚注意到诗里前三段一直强调两条路一样, 说并没有一条比另一条少走人,那就和
最后一段相矛盾。好象当初没注意到,只当做励志诗。 刚查了一下,有人说弗斯特故
意这样写,说自己日后会扭曲当初做选择的情形 - 明明当初是一样的路, 可非告诉人
说, 自己是因为一条偏僻而有意选择的。原来是个玩笑...
(刚查到的一个讲评:
A close look at the poem reveals that Frost's walker encounters two nearlv
identical paths: so he insists, repeatedly. The walker looks down one, first
, then the other, "as just as fair." Indeed, "the passing there / Had worn
them reallv about the same." As if the reader hasn't gotten the message,
Frost says for a third time. "And both that morning equally lay/ In leaves
no step had trodden black." What, then, can we make of the final stanza? My
guess is that Frost, the wily ironist, is saying something like this: "When
I am old, like all old men, I shall make a myth of my life. I shall pretend,
as we all do, that I took the less traveled road. But I shall be lying."
Frost signals the mockingly self-inflated tone of the last stanza by
repeating the word "I," which rhymes - several times - with the inflated
word "sigh." Frost wants the reader to know that what he will be saying,
that he took the road less traveled, is a fraudulent position, hence the
sigh.
