yes head requires a cab, can be any size/config
the combo you are using is just a head + a cab packed in one box
head IS an amp. depends on its type, if it's tube you'll need bigger
volume to get the full tone but solid state you can play at any level
won't make a difference.
just use the head like you use a combo amp
2x12 will be fine too
