for me is Snape, by far.
He has the most unpleasant personality, always sullen and mean spirited. An un
popular boy in school and easy target for the bullies, he was not able to get
over it even in adulthood. Jealous and hatred combined with a secret yearning
for power (or self-proving?), turned him bitter, cold and aloof.
He's also definitely exceptionally intelligent, (while courage defines Harry m
ore than intelligence), inventing spells from a very young age, and being high
ly accomplished b

同意啊，如果Snape真的是坏人，Rowling才不会在第二章就把他的坏人
本色暴露呢。Rowling喜欢先误导大家，再给一个surprise。

You know, when I was on book 5, I really wondered why Snape
chose to be on the good side. He seemed to truly love
dark arts, and was extremely unpopular in the order. And
I'm not sure he loved Lily Evans... remember his contempt
for muggle-born wizards/witches?
Then I thought maybe he turned to the good side beacause
of the atrocity of Lord Voldemort's doings. But then even
Dumbledore asked him to kill... had to become a murderer
either way. What a wrenched fate.

I did feel my little Snape-loves-Lily theory crushed when I read that mudblood
part in book 5. But come to think of it, it could be out of the utter shame a
nd embarassment of being bullied in front of the one you love, and even worse,
being rescued by her. Sometimes people hide vulnerability behind extream anim
osity.

I agree with your theory about "love", since it is, as you said, what
Dumbledore always emphasised on.
But I am a little confused... when I read book 5, I thought Snape was not as
good at spell as James Potter or Sirius Black. But in Book 6, it seems that he
can even invent the spells. I dunno why he didn't fight back.

oh yeah. i checked Book5 for Snape's worst memory. Both James and Sirius
challenged him. But anyway, Snape looked awkward. It's weird that although
I feel James and Sirius arrogant, I like them more.

Well, Harry snuck into Snape's pensieve for Snape's worst memory so it doesn't
really count. And for the other brief glimpses, it could be argued that he ju
st caught Snape off guard. Snape cannot be as careless when he's around any gr
own-ups. =)

well, i really don't think snape falled in lily. when secretly loving some gir
l, a boy may play practical jokes on her in order to draw attention. but he'd
never insulted her like calling her "mudblood".

snape's attracted to dark arts does not necessarily mean he's evil inside. on
the contrary, he never showed any intension to kill anybody.
it's just like the scientists who worked on the inventory of nuclear wheapons
may also want world peace. and in some sense, that is quite petious.

cuz i first thought they were my type of people. i thought lord voldemort was
the one who might made the world more ideal. but finally i found that i was to
tally wrong because those people were indeed murderers and more evil than what
i could possibly imagin.

DD always knew whom he could trust.
don't u think there might be something like the unbreakable vow between them.
DD not only trust snape, but also kinda rely on him in my point of view. i don
't think snape's loving for lily is strong enough a reason that DD trusted and
relied so much on him. my thought is
HE TRUST HIM BECAUSE HE KNEW AND UNDERSTAND HIM.

I just read the part III of JKR interview, and there is a very interesting
answer:
MA: Oh, here抯 one [from our forums] that I抳e really got to ask you. Has Snape ever been loved by anyone?
JKR: Yes, he has, which in some ways makes him more culpable even than Voldemort, who never has.
I guess this is the key.

not has loved someone. curious...
really can't imagine what will happen if snape is still a DE. how could harry
possibly win the war then?

My wild guess is that Voldemort promised him that only James and Harry need
die, so Snape killed James, but Lily refused to step aside so Voldemort killed
her in spite of objection of Snape.....
I know maybe I went too far. :D Another 2 years waiting... Argh!!! It gonna
kill me!

rowling said the reason that snape was more culpable than voldemort is that he
has been loved by someone, while voldemort hasn't.
now i really wanna kidnap rowling to get her plan. seriously, i hate this woma

it must be voldemort who killed james, cuz in book 4 james's image also came f

now we come up 2 theories:
1. Snape loved Lily.... He hated Harry so much because everytime he saw Harry
he felt it should have been his son, with Lily's eyes.

snape in spinner's end shows another side of him. gentle and reliable. i'd say
this character is really interesting.

It could be just a pretense though, a consequence of practising
occlumency. :) Snape usually became very emotional when he was
wronged. But when Bella accused him of betraying the dark lord,
he was surprisingly cool-headed and tactful... a clear indication
that he was on his guard.

After re-reading the parts about Snape in Book6, I like him more and
more. Plan to go back the previous 5 later this week. :D

and wrong should be wrong. But I won't be surprised if he was killed by

hehe, I agree, but no matter. Rowling rules and decides what'd
happen to our old Snape. :) Given Snape's short temper and
prejudice against Harry's lot, she could make him do very nasty
things if she wanted to... though I also hope she won't.
