I published Lineage Organisation in Southeastern China in 1958. It was an
attempt to bring together what I then knew about its subject, mainly from
published work, and to discuss the role of unilineal descent grouping in
China against the background of anthrpological theory. When I finished it I
knew it was not ended, for I was conscious of having failed to tap the
existing sources in Chinese and Japanese, and I was confident that my
exercise in the armchair anthropology of China would fairly soon be improved
on both by people sinologically better equipped than I and by field workers
able to take advantage of possibilities for research open in the New
Territories of Hong Kong.
首先感覺行文簡單,小詞,清晰,自然,樸素,優雅。沒有多餘的廢話。不過最後一句
是個典型的長被動句。
[1958年我出版了一書。此書集結了我當時主要從已出版作品中獲得
的知識,在人類學的理論背景下討論了單邊世系群在中國的角色。其完成後我,就知道
工作並沒有結束,因為我意識到我沒能觸及既存漢語和日語資料,我也相信,我的書齋
中的中國人類學會很快被比我更具漢學功底的人,以及能夠利用到香港新界開放的研究
可能機會的人所改進。]
