The World Wide Operations Team is the engine that drives and delivers your
Amazon.com order to your doorstep.
The people here are constantly faced with challenges involving scalability,
process flow, implementing business logic,
optimization algorithms, inventory controls, and tracking high volumes of
real-time data metrics. We do all this to
ensure we continue to keep our customer promise to be “Earth's most
Customer Centric Company". What we are doing
is truly unique and software and systems are being designed, built, and
executed in-house, from the ground up. Amazon
manages the fulfillment of millions of customer orders and without the
Operations group; products would never make it
to your home.
Merchants
Did you know that the technology behind Amazon.com also powers the websites
of many of the world's largest brands
in retail? These teams are creating the largest B2B network in the world. We
are chartered with building solutions,
processes, and tools that help merchants sell successfully on Amazon.com and
also on their own web sites. We
provide retailers a turnkey, outsourced e-commerce solution that
incorporates Amazon 's widely recognized shopping
features and technology, while still allowing retailers to entirely control
the look and feel of their Web sites. Engineers
have a dramatic impact on how tens of thousands of merchants successfully
sell at Amazon.com by working with and
influencing the product direction of every major aspect of the Amazon.com
core technology platform, while designing
and implementing custom shopping sites.
Retail
It is our goal to innovate and set standards for what an optimized online
shopping experience should look & feel like.
We do this by delivering the retail systems and projects for Amazon's global
web sites. We provide the software and
systems that support the core Amazon.com business of selecting,
merchandizing and selling products, including the
creation of new URLs to support new customer experiences. This organization
also is at the heart of new category and
product expansion for domestic and international sites. We deal with
challenges that include solving hard mathematical
problems, managing distributed workflow systems, and creating an innovative
user experience. Engineers deal with real
business impact combined with solving hard technology problems that involve
millions of customers and will have the
unique experience of working and learning directly with our buyers and
merchandisers in business.
Applications
Our Applications groups are working hard to build innovative, newsworthy
customer experiences designed revolutionize
the shopping and merchandizing experience and enable our 40 million
customers to help each other find, discover
and buy anything. Our feature areas include building social networks,
inventing new ways to search and navigate, and
enabling external developers to build innovative applications on top of
Amazon's e-commerce platform. Our technical
and intellectual challenges are huge: how do we deal with enormous scale,
both in terms of traffic and numbers of
products and customers, and how do we make the site so rich and compelling.
AWS
Amazon Web Services (AWS) delivers a set of simple building block services
that together form a reliable, scalable, and
inexpensive computing platform "in the cloud" built upon the same technology
that Amazon.com uses to run its global
web properties. These pay-as-you-go services provide an outsourced IT
infrastructure that allows companies of all sizes,
from all across the globe, to cost-effectively deploy scalable and
dependable applications – ranging from websites to
enterprise backup to scientific and financial analysis.
Digital/Kindle
The Amazon teams are reinventing media content and the way we deliver
content. The team is creating new and
innovative hardware, software, and digital products for innovative delivery.

Platform Technologies
From targeted, personalized merchandising to systems that serve website
content from distributed data centers around
the world, the Platform Technologies organization builds the tools,
frameworks and services that let users develop,
assemble, deploy, and maintain world-class websites from boutiques like
Endless.com to Amazon.com itself. Our
hosting software ensures consistency and availability across thousands of
hosts, responding in real-time to changes
in traffic and load. Our email systems deliver billions of targeted emails,
directly driving revenue to our sites. Through
highly specialized content management systems, site development tools, and
sophisticated experimentation software,
we give website owners the power they need to make their online businesses
thrive.
eCommerce Services
With Amazon doubling in scale every two to three years, the core eCommerce
Services is challenged to invent and
re-invent its systems to scale to each new order of magnitude. What does
that mean? It means we build world-class
distributed systems that process millions of transactions per second and
manage petabytes of data with high availability
and low latency. We pride ourselves in solving “textbook-less problems” –
complex software engineering challenges
that require new invention. Our teams build software that powers websites
around the globe, including Amazon’s
world-wide offerings as well as websites for external merchants. Our systems
– including identity management, order
management, fraud detection, catalog management, and payment processing –
enable billions of dollars of eCommerce
transactions per year. The software developed here literally touches every
customer order and enables us to ship
accurate orders on time.
