The corresponding author is a high-profile author and she may be an ad hoc reviewer herself. She must know quite a few people. It's not hard for her to publish that Nature paper at all. She is in that club. The problem is it seems she didn't take a careful look at those results. I don't think she would risk all her reputation to help a student publish a paper by manipulating data intentionally. It's stupid. So I think they may retract this paper and the student will leave without a doctoral degree.
i agree with you. it must have been done by the student. but she is too careless

is this a new system? Newly installed .NET framework will compile libraries in the background, thus consuming CPU utilization. This is a one-time thing. You can also post a screen grab of task manager.

Sigh, this is the shame of nowadays' science. PIs don't do experiments themselves, push ideas or data to satisfy those "fantasies" of reviewers and editors. To publish in higher Journals is their ultimate goal. Scientific integrity and ethical issues are all secondary to them. We can categorize this paper's act as stupid, and being busted. However, there are tons of papers more or less with massaging data in a "smarter" way and people will never find out. The result is it either mislead readers or gave totally wrong messages to readers.
