Yes, having an AP title does help your grant application. It is hard to apply for independent grant if you have a postdoc title. Talk to your boss and see if she is willing to serve as a co-PI of your independent grant. It will be a win-win situation. I have a friend. She got a postdoc fellowship, and her boss was happy. So she asked for a research AP title right away. Then she applied a K08 grant right away and got the K08. She got a few faculty offers in a few top 50 schools. K08 is a big carriable grant that last for 5 years! She only had two Cancer Research first author papers as a postdoc. Good luck

The key is research AP WITH MONEY! Without transferable grant, research AP is not better than a postdoc, and sometimes even worse because you are considered as "千老”. As a postdoc, you don't have many chances to apply for transferable grant. K99 is highly competitive nowadays and you need CNS paper to get it (just in case someone will argue with me on this, there is always exception). I have to say it is not easy for a research AP to apply for grants like R03, or R21, because you are competing against all the big guys at the same time. You have a disadvantage to start with. But nothing is easy nowadays. If you don't think you can get CNS paper in the near future, then you need to have the money.

K99 is mainly for postdocs who have 3-4 years of postdoc experience. You should have some good publication and enough preliminary data to support your application. plus, I am not sure your boss will support your application at this moment. Because once you get your K99, you have to land a faculty job in 1-2 years. To your boss, this means he will lose a cheap labor in a very short period of time.
