No. Research track will also be eligible. It is school/boss dependent. Some
even support research associate/specialist.

Outstanding professors and researchers
You must demonstrate international recognition for your outstanding
achievements in a particular academic field. You must have at least 3 years
experience in teaching or research in that academic area. You must be
entering the United States in order to pursue tenure or tenure track
teaching or comparable research position at a university or other
institution of higher education.
This is from USCIS website. it looks like faculty has to be tenured or on
tenure track, right?

permanent employment” as set forth in 8 C.F.R. § 204.5(i)(2) when
adjudicating first preference (EB-1) petitions filed on behalf of
outstanding researchers."
USCIS before had a lot of disputes about "permanent employment", so they had
this guidance memorandum to clarify it. Note the second bullet (II) saying
"a comparable position with a university." As long as you can provide
evidence (usually an employment verification letter stating your position is
permanent and full-time), you should be mostly fine.
