Dear HKU family,

亲爱的港大家人：

As we turn a new leaf and welcome 2023, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, for being a part of our diverse yet tight-knit family. The past year has not been easy, but together, we have overcome many challenges.

在我们翻开新的一页并迎接 2023 年之际，我想藉此机会感谢大家，你们中的每个人都是我们这个多元却又紧密联系的大家庭的一员。过去的一年实属不易，但我们共同克服了许多挑战。

As we celebrate HKU’s 111th Anniversary, I’d like to remind you the three steps that will bring us more success: cultivate talent, innovate for impact, and reform for higher efficiency.

在庆祝香港大学111周年校庆之际，我想提醒大家成功的三大关键：培养人才，以创新产生影响力，以改革提升效率。

HKU is a place where talents from all over the world can thrive. Going forward, HKU must be an intellectually stimulating home for people to flourish with academic rigor and creativity. We cherish both the talent at home, and those who join us from around the world. We shall continue to support and empower our scholars across all disciplines.

香港大学是一个可以让来自世界各地的人才茁壮成长的地方。展望未来，港大必须成为既激发智慧又让人们以严谨的学术态度和创造力充分发展之地。我们同样珍惜已身处校园及来自世界各地新近加入的人才，与此同时，我们将继续支持和赋能所有学科的学者。

That is why we recently launched the Lasting Impact Fund, a program that supports innovative colleagues currently at HKU, in their pursuit of transformative blue-sky research. We also introduced the $1 billion Large Research Equipment Fund, to enhance our state-of-art facilities. During the past year, we attracted more than forty star scholars from top overseas institutions.

这就是我们最近推出“持久影响力基金”的原因所在，这个项目支持在港大具有创新精神的同事进行颠覆性及好奇心驱动的科学研究。我们还推出了10亿元的“大型科研设备基金”，以确保我们拥有世界领先的研究设施。过去一年里，我们一共吸引了超过40位来自海外顶级大学的明星学者加入港大。

Here at HKU, we are champions of innovating for societal impact. The Tech Landmark launched this year embodies our can-do spirit. We seek to identify how knowledge and technology can be leveraged to tackle grand challenges of our time, ranging from poverty to climate change to human health.

在港大，我们倡导创新以产生社会影响。今年破土动工的科创地标 " Tech Landmark "充分体现了我们乐观进取的精神。我们将积极寻求并确定如何利用知识和技术来解决我们这个时代所面对的巨大挑战，这包括从贫困到气候变化到人类健康等议题。

We are a global family, a global university, rooted in a global city with students from 90 countries and regions. As the world’s most internationalized university, we will reconnect in full with the global community at large as the city reopens.

我们是一所扎根于全球大都市的全球大学，在这个全球大家庭里，学生来自90多个国家和地区。作为世界上最国际化的大学，随着香港的重新开放，我们将与全球社会全面地重新链接。

111 years ago, HKU was founded with the mission of providing visionary education for people who want to change the world for the better. Thus, change has long served as the core tenet of our vision for HKU. We must reform to tackle the roots of long-standing issues in anticipation of future challenges. With less bureaucracy and red tape, we will soar higher.

111年前，香港大学成立之初的使命就是为那些想改变世界的人提供有前瞻性的教育。因此，变革早已成为我们港大愿景里的核心价值。我们必须进行改革，根本解决长期存在的问题，以迎接未来的挑战。只有减少官僚主义和繁文缛节，我们才能飞得更高更远。

Although our challenges are great, I am confident we have the courage and wisdom to face them. Your unfailing devotion to our university is what makes it great. It is that spirit that will continue to drive HKU to a brighter future ahead of us.

面对前方艰巨的挑战，我深信我们有勇气和智慧迎难而上。你们对大学不遗余力的支持及奉献使得她变得卓越，就是这种精神将继续推动港大走向更加光明的未来。

May 2023 bring hope, happiness and good health, for you and your loved ones.
