We can see that people across China have their local favorites when it comes to Spring Festival shopping. But they do fall into several categories: celebratory decorations, ingredients for the nianyefan (Spring Festival eve dinner), snacks, gifts, new clothes...basically all kinds of things to get you into the festival mood.
Blooming flowers represent how we want to thrive in the new year. Like flowers, a lot of things that we buy are considered auspicious.
Most families have a year-end cleaning ritual. That's our way to clean out the old and make space for the new. And we call it ci jiu ying xin. That's a time we get rid of the unwanted stuff and deep clean every corner in the house.
