Yingge Dance, a traditional folk art combining dancing, Chinese martial arts, and Chinese opera, is popular in the Chaoshan area of Guangdong province in South China. The performances, a must-watch for the local people, also attracted lots of tourists during this Spring festival. The amazing dancing and dazzling formations mesmerized the audience.
During the Spring Festival, videos and pictures of the Yingge Dance flooded social media. One video, circulating just before the Spring Festival, of Chaoshan youths performing Yingge Dance on the streets went viral, receiving nearly 200 million views.
火出圈的英歌舞
Yingge Dance, or "Hero's Song", is one of the most representative forms of folk art in South China’s Guangdong and Southeast China’s Fujian, which combines dancing, nanquan (southern Chinese-style boxing) and opera. The performers wear facial makeup to represent the 108 Stars of Destiny from the Chinese classical novel Shui Hu Zhuan (The Water Margin).
Dancers, each holding short sticks, jump up and down, incorporating powerful movements and strong rhythms. Yingge Dance has always been regarded as the embodiment of auspiciousness, and people believe that a Yingge Dance performance brings "good luck".
