The "epidemic" – the "black swan" that has hindered Chinese children from exploring the world has temporarily left our vision. But how many children with great ambition are disrupted by the "black swan" to explore the world?
It has been difficult for students to participate in top summer school or global exploration or an SAT test abroad during the past three years.
And when will the next black swan come again? No one can predict it.
Why not to restart the programmes and set off to the world before the next black swan arrives.
This is an invitation letter for NACIS students.
We invite you to
-stand on the stage at the United Nations Headquarters on behalf of NACIS students, express the thoughts of Chinese teenagers, and speak for children around the world.
-step into the classroom of MIT, learn from the professors of MIT, and experience the STEAM courses designed for NACIS students by the top university.
-pick up the backpack, measure the earth with your feet, discover the truth with your eyes, and change the world with your hands. Explore from the top of the snow mountains in Switzerland to the rise and fall of Tanzania in Africa.
-get out of your comfort zone and stand on the brand-new stage of any of the 81 schools around the world to dance, sing and communicate with Juilliard masters.
Of course, NACIS children are invited to participate in these programmes.
Yes, don't be envious. NACIS children are close to the world like neighbors.
As an extension of the NACIS classroom, we will restart a series of programmes including the UNICEF Summit, the Juilliard Programme, the performing arts activities, the MIT-NAE STEAM Week, the Swiss Adventure, and the Tanzania Challenges, so as to help students improve self-confidence, creativity, international competence, interdisciplinary thinking and innovative thinking.
In 2023, let us embrace the world and head out into the world.
THE FIRST STOP: NEW YORK, UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS
STAND ON THE STAGE OF THE UN HEADQUARTERS AND SPEAK OUT FOR CHINESE TEENAGERS
THE UNICEF SUMMIT LEADS NACIS STUDENTS TO THE UN STAGE
Back in time, Canson, William, and Rachael from class of 2022 were confident and calm "diplomats" at the Model United Nations conference. Canson, who is now studying philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, William, who is studying earth and planetary science at Imperial College London, and Rachael, who is studying media at Pepperdine University, were diplomatic representatives of different countries. They participated in debates around the hot topics and mediated for the "national interest". During the activities, they put forward the resolution of international issues by writing draft resolutions and voting, discussed how to avoid terrorism on the internet, reduced the harm of illegal immigration, and came up with draft resolutions against fake news. These global problems occurred in every corner of the world. They learned to feel the changes in every corner of the world in a different perspective and believed that they could bring some positive changes to the world.
Every year, NACIS receives invitations from UNICEF and our students have the opportunity to participate in the Sustainable Development Goals programme and World Children's Day. On November 18 last year, NACIS turned into a blue sea. With blue hair, blue skirts, and blue faces, our students decorated the campus with "UN Blue" and "NACIS Blue", so as to arouse the world to listen to children's voices and care about children's rights.
We encourage students to express their views on the various issues in the local community and the world, and cultivate their leadership and global vision, so that they can pursue a higher self-awareness and value realization and make a positive impact on others. We believe that our students can influence others and bring more power to change the NACIS community and the world.
This year, the "NAE-UNICEF Summit" will be held from July 12 to 17. NACIS "student ambassadors" will be able to participate in a variety of workshops and activities such as sustainable development seminars and a visit to the UN Headquarters in New York. They will have the unique opportunities to participate in political discussions and influence political decisions.
THE SECOND STOP: THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL, NEW YORK
SHINE ON THE WORLD STAGE WITH MUSIC, DANCE AND DRAMA - SHOW YOUR WORKS THROUGH JUILLIARD PERFORMING ARTS
At NACIS, we can see the confident and happy faces of our young artists from the orchestra, choir, folk orchestra, and drama club.
After school every day, we can always capture wonderful music and cheers in the theater, piano rooms, and dance rooms. After lunch every Friday, we witness the birth of " new stars" with original works. All of them shine on the stage of Friday Forum. In the winter concert and musicals "The Wizard of Oz", and "The Addams Family", they played the roles of directors, producers, engineers, designers. NACIS is committed to providing a stage and atmosphere for every student who loves music, dance, and drama.
Since its establishment, NACIS has been in-depth cooperation with the Juilliard School in music, dance and drama courses. Every year, the Juilliard experts and artists visit NACIS and interact with our teachers, students, and the community, so as to bring excellence to classroom teaching and inspire students' passion for arts.
Ms. Sarah, Head of Primary Performing Arts, said "Music, dance, and drama are exquisite skills to express the human spirit. In daily teaching, we adopt a series of music, dance, and drama works designed and selected by the Juilliard School, so as to help students strengthen the learning of performing arts, stimulate their imagination and creativity, and build connection with music, dance and drama.”
When recalling that she went to New York with teachers from Nord Anglia schools around the world to conduct professional training at the Juilliard School, as well as the "Summer Juilliard Performing Arts" held at NACIS every summer, Ms. Sarah said "I still remember when I arrived at Juilliard School, I saw many outstanding artists. The four-day training was a feast of creativity. Some masters also visited NACIS including Clara Kim, Will Hakim and Andrea Lee, etc., I was deeply impressed by charm of the masters and the inherent beauty of performing arts. I am looking forward to the expert visits and summer activities this year.
THE THIRD STOP: THE ALPS MOUNTAINS OR TANZANIA
MEASURE THE SNOW MOUNTAINS WITH FEET AND PROTECT AFRICAN GRASSLAND WITH RESPONSIBILITY
You may have thousands of feelings from places you visit- the important thing is how you walk into it and experience it.
Every student can take the initiative to discover, perceive, and create in nature. They are expected to carry their bags and enrich their life experience with action. The knowledge learned in the classroom will be vivid in every action and become a part of themselves.
Every time we see Steven, he always has a gentle smile on his face and a calm bravery in his eyes. He’s excited to hear that the Swiss expedition will be restarted. He seemed to think of many interesting things. "At that time, I was in grade 6, and I signed up for the event without hesitation. Although I didn't have any experience of hiking or living independently in the wild, I told myself in mind, 'Challenge yourself, and you can do it’. Then I completed the challenge when I was 12 years old."
"After returning from Switzerland, I like to accept challenges. The freshness brought by each challenge keeps inspiring me to try more bravely and step out of my comfort zone, which is also like widening my comfort zone. I am like a bamboo, which grows taller with resilience. When faced with greater pressure every time, I will think of the mountains I have crossed. Then I will work harder to cope with it.”
Despite the jet lag, he had hiked 15 kilometers a day for four days and three nights. Steven, who was in poor physical condition at that time, never thought of giving up. Instead, he worried that he would be left behind and affect the itinerary of the whole team. This expedition team formed after arriving in Switzerland seemed to have an extraordinary tacit understanding. In the unique Swiss-style high-altitude mountain roads, cliffs and snow fields, students worked together to challenge themselves. "Students in our group cared about me very much. They waited for me along the way and even let me go ahead. We became familiar and took care of each other! On the way we visited Swiss Glacier, we were on the same set of safety ropes. I was honored that my companions and I witnessed the vast snow scene and built a deep friendship. And when we came to the platform at the end of the big glacier, it was even more shocking. At this time, I had a feeling of “small mountains' in my mind. After leaving the glacier, we sat down and rested in a green forest. we looked at each other and smiled. I also felt unprecedented joy and peace from the bottom of my heart."
When the scenery you see is no longer just scenery, it contains the sincere enthusiasm, emotions, and spirit.
If hiking in Switzerland is about challenging yourself and exploring your potential, then the Tanzania camp will provide you a new understanding of life and becoming better global citizens. Lily, who hiked in Switzerland in grade 7 and participated in Tanzania challenge in grade 9, is a student from class of 2023 now. She has an inspiring and powerful energy in her body.
Recalling the few days in the camp in Tanzania, she witnessed the lives of the local residents. It was difficult for them to obtain pure water and food. They had to walk several kilometers to fetch water. "I see the other side of the real world from their experiences. However, the local residents did not complain in such a difficult environment. There’s still vitality in the barren land. They don’t need sympathy and I respected them. It's never too late to make a change."
"If hiking in Switzerland gave me the courage to break through myself, I gained another perspective from the Tanzania journey. It taught us to keep humble. Only when we really learn about the real situation, we will have a more in-depth perception of the knowledge learned in the textbooks, and we will try our best to change it." Lily said, "the people, animals, grasslands there, even the setting sun is worth you to do your best for them."
We believe that the Tanzania programme can help students see life in a different perspective, which will lead them to participate in future programmes actively.
Would you like to go to Switzerland or Tanzania in July?
THE FINAL STOP: MIT
MIT “MIND AND HAND” CHALLENGE
-EXPERIENCE MIT STEAM IN ADVANCE
Nord Anglia works with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to introduce your child to the STEAM Programme. Every year, the professors from MIT design open task challenges for students, which requires them to work in teams and solve problems with interdisciplinary thinking.
Our teachers have been integrating the content of the annual MIT Challenge into the STEAM programme, creating opportunities for students to recognize the commonality of art, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students can develop various projects and learn knowledge, so as to demonstrate their creativity in different ways outside the classroom. This year, the NACIS children are coping with the "Alien Life", "Cell Division Exploration" challenges from Dr. Yukiko, Principal Investigator and Professor of Biology of the MIT Department of Biology, and Dr. Sara Seager, an astrophysicist and professor of planetary science and physics through global campus.
With the exciting online challenges, we also have more inspiring news as scheduled in 2023. Nord Anglia-MIT STEAM Week will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in October this year. The trip to MIT, which has been suspended for three years, will be restarted to students from grades 10-12 at NACIS. As an interdisciplinary elite of NACIS, are you ready for it?
