Marking as the latest directorial outing of Rao Xiaozhi, the movie takes places in a fictional country in North Africa which is torn by a civil war. Two Chinese diplomats, starring actors Zhang Yi and Wang Junkai, are assigned to carry out a dangerous mission: to evacuate the stranded Chinese nationals in the country.
Actor Zhang Yi plays Zong Dawei, a veteran diplomat with extensive experiences navigating complex situations in Arabic-speaking countries. His wisdom is displayed again after convincing a stubborn border service officer to allow stranded Chinese nationals who lost their passports, get past the border.
Facing strict requests from the officer, Zong managed to solve the problems, by making temporary identity documents, to translating them into Arabic, to reshooting the ID photos with the correct color backdrop.
However, it is Zong's courage and selfless spirit that has finally touched the border officer, making him will to allow the stranded Chinese to cross the border line.
Zhang is a veritable acting masterclass in this stunning performance. His performance is nuanced and every detail attended to. Every acting choice is justified and brings dimension to his character.
The movie is based on the real-life stories of China's evacuation of Chinese citizens stranded overseas. In past years, the international situation was complicated. Chinese nationals were evacuated from Libya in 2011, and Yemen in 2015, and from Ukraine this year. Chinese diplomats have courageously mediated between various forces and endeavored to bring overseas Chinese back home.
