The Shanghai American Center is delighted to invite you to a special literary event on August 22nd at 6:30 PM to celebrate the acclaimed collection of essays, Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry, by renowned American poet Jane Hirshfield.
This collection delves into the art of poetry, exploring how poets can fully express themselves while embracing and merging with the world and the universe. Since its Chinese publication in November 2023, Nine Gates has garnered widespread acclaim from readers and the Chinese poetry community.
To mark this occasion, and in conjunction with Jane Hirshfield’s visit to Shanghai as part of the Iowa International Writing Program (IWP) delegation, we are thrilled to host a dialogue between Jane Hirshfield, Hu Sang, and Zhang Dinghao—three poets who have made significant contributions to poetry writing and criticism.
Join us as they discuss the themes of Nine Gates, the craft of poetry writing, the interplay between poetry and life, how poetry serves as a lens through which we view the world, and the relevance and renewal of classical Eastern poetry in contemporary times.
We look forward to an evening of insightful conversation and poetic inspiration.
