What does success look like?
(这是学生们在阅读Moonbird: A year on the wind with the great survivor B95中的一个Essay Topic)
One historical figure that I think was successful is Abraham Lincoln. The 16th president of the United States of America is often regarded by many as the greatest president to ever exist. If not for his hard work during the Civil War, the Confederacy would have probably succeeded in becoming its own country, (i agree) and the country would not be as great as it is today. Abraham Lincoln was one of the most “successful” people in history.
One of the reasons Lincoln was so successful was despite because of how un-promising his background was. His mother died when he was young, and their family was undeniably poor. He only attended school for one year. Even though he taught himself to read on his own afterward, it was still not as effective as going to school and reading on your own. Yet despite the rough childhood, Lincoln went on to win both the popular and electoral vote in the 1860 presidential election and became president. What seemed like a hopeless childhood turned into the presidency for Lincoln.
Another one of the reasons why Lincoln was so successful was how he managed the Union to earn them a victory against the Confederate. Even though Lincoln didn’t do any of the fighting that soldiers did, he kept the Union in good shape during the long war and maintained it long enough for the Union to win the war. If Lincoln didn’t experiment and fire generals that were not capable of commanding, (true McClellan was useless) the war would have lasted much longer due to several of Lincoln’s generals being useless and always getting defeated.
B95’s qualities that led him to success was never giving up on hope no matter how much pain and misery it has been through, and always having the grit to keep going. Those qualities were a major contributor to Lincoln’s success too. Even when it seemed like the Union just couldn’t get a victory and the Confederatc ye was going to win, he carried through and won the war for America. Even through his own personal tragedies, he was able to lift up the nation on his shoulder and represent it with greatness.
