"The producer said the Asians were not good enough and they are not box office," said James Hong. "But look at us now."
On February 26, Everything Everywhere All At Once had a stellar evening at the 2023 SAG Awards, with Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis all taking home statues for their respective roles in the sci-fi comedy, before earning SAG's top prize for Cast in a Motion Picture.

"There’s been one who has been supporting ensembles for longer than any of us have been alive," Yeoh reflected. "He's been acting since there were only 49 states, and he just turned 94. And it's been 69 years in the making to get him to this stage."
Hong kicked off his speech in Cantonese, because “we might be broadcast in Hong Kong,” before switching to English.
He received his first SAG card a whopping 70 years ago and his first film credit was in a Clark Gable movie.
"Back in those days, I have to tell you this, in The Good Earth, the leading roles were played by these guys with their eyes taped up like this, and they talk like this."
"The producer said the Asians were not good enough and they are not box office," said James Hong. "But look at us now."
“这是我在美国演员工会奖上看到的最佳获奖感言之一。他们尊重了一个传奇。” "One of the best acceptance speeches I seen at the SAG awards. They honored a legend."
“对我们亚裔美国人来说,赢得这一奖项是历史上的美好时刻!《瞬息全宇宙》是一部如此美丽的电影,它绝对值得这个奖。” "A beautiful moment in history for us Asians Americans to win this category! EEAAO is such a beautiful flm it definitely deservesthis category."
“吴汉章说出广东话的时候太感动我了,这个演员值得拥有一切。” "James Hong speaking in Cantonese GAVE ME LIFE! This cast deserves everything!"
Hong’s legendary career spans roughlyseven decades and 700 film, television and video game credits, including Chinatown, Blade Runner, Kung Fu Panda, Seinfeld and many more.
He has always been outspoken about the hurdles that Asian American actors face in the entertainment industry. "I did the best as an actor to overcome the cliché-ness because I had to in order to keep working," said Hong.
He’s worked to call for better representation of Asian and Asian American characters onscreen, including by creating the East West Players, an Asian American theater group in LA.
"When I came back from Hong Kong at 9 years old, I was beaten up in the grade school playgrounds, because I couldn’t speak English," Hong recalled to NBC News.
"From that point, I fought all the way to what I’m doing now. So I encourage all Asian Americans, all people of all different nationalities, to express yourself and do your own thing the best you can, and then things will get better as a whole."
