How do Households Respond to Permanent and Transitory Income Shocks? 

Evidence from Pension Reforms in Urban China

Consumption response to permanent and transitory income changes is of central interest in economic studies. Understanding how consumption responds differently to transitory or permanent income changes is important for academia and policymakers. Exploring the prefectural policies that permanently and temporarily increase pension income in urban China, we use a representative monthly panel diary dataset to examine how household consumption responds to transitory and permanent pension increases. We find that, for each pension increase, the reform, on average, increases both permanent and transitory pension incomes among the eligible households, respectively. Based on the responses in the consumption, our estimates yield an estimate of marginal propensity to consume (MPC) being 0.64 to 0.96 but 0.05 to 0.12 for transitory income, consistent with structural estimation. The consumption responses differ by consumption categories. The estimated MPC is much larger among the households with higher liquidity constraints. By contrast, we find no significant changes in other household incomes, including wage, property, business or transfers, or other outcomes such as household size, structure, and individual labor supply. This paper provides novel evidence about different household responses to transitory and permanent income changes and delivers policy implications for predicting dynamic household responses to public policies.

The Value of the Top Five:

Evidence from Scientific Publications in Economics

This paper examines the causal impacts of the first publication in the top 5 (T5)  economics journals on the author’s lifetime academic career. Leveraging detailed historical information about authors with scientific publications appearing in 155 world-leading economic journals, we compare scholarly achievements between authors with T5 publications with similar authors without T5s. Using the staggered difference-in-differences model, our findings provide unambiguous evidence that the first T5 publication significantly alters the author’s academic career with a focus on balancing the quality vs. quantity of publications and establishing and maintaining collaboration networks. We also document a notable gender gap in publications but not in collaboration patterns.

崔静波，昆山杜克大学社会科学部应用经济学副教授，环境研究中心代理主任。曾担任武汉大学经济与管理学院副教授，湖北省楚天学子人才计划，美国爱荷华州立大学经济学系博士后、访问助理教授。他博士毕业于美国爱荷华州立大学获经济学博士学位，硕士和本科分别毕业于武汉大学和华中科技大学。研究方向：环境经济学、专利创新、国际贸易。研究成果以第一作者或通讯作者身份发表在经济学国内顶级期刊《经济研究》、《管理世界》、《经济学（季刊）》(2篇)、《中国工业经济》，以及国际权威期刊Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), American Economic Review Papers and Proceedings, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, American Journal of Agricultural Economics (2篇), Environmental and Resource Economics, Journal of Regional Science, China Economic Review, The World Economy, Energy Economics (3篇), Energy Policy (2篇)等。研究成果被Nature Climate Change亮点报告。主持国家自然科学基金面上项目、青年项目、应急项目、国家社科基金重大招标项目子课题、以及江苏省青蓝项目。长期担任环境与资源经济学、创新经济学国际顶级学术期刊(JEEM, JAERE, AJAE, ERE, Nature Climate Change, Research Policy)，以及国内权威学术期刊《中国工业经济》、《经济学（季刊）》等匿名审稿人。关于中国区域碳市场、清洁发展机制、企业低碳技术创新的相关研究成果被《中国环境报》、《经济观察报》、《21世纪经济报道》等媒体平台采访、转载并报道，并受邀参加上海TEDX公开演讲。
