In this summer, a new trend has emerged on the beaches of Qingdao, Shandong province of China — the "Chocolate Grandpas". Referring to those deliberately tanned elderly locals, they have become a new tourist attraction.
Qingdao, known for its picturesque beaches and coastal charm, has a unique group of beachgoers affectionately referred to as the "Chocolate Grandpas." These retirees, with their distinctive tanned skin, have become a fascinating sight for both locals and visitors. Often mistaken for foreign tourists at first glance, the "Chocolate Grandpas" are, in fact, Qingdao natives with a flair for swimming and a heart for helping others.
These Qingdao residents have dedicated their leisure time to swimming for decades, with some even for over half a century.
They treat the beach as their community park, where they gather for tea, chat, and exercise, displaying strength and energy comparable to the young.
For many Qingdao residents, the beach is more than just a place to relax; it serves as an extension of their community and a hub for social activities. Whether it's gathering for tea and casual conversations or engaging in vigorous exercises, these active seniors demonstrate an infectious vitality that can rival that of younger generations.
However, what sets the "Chocolate Grandpas" apart is their unwavering commitment to the safety of others. Over the years, they have developed an innate sense of responsibility and become seasoned experts in understanding the sea's dynamics, including weather conditions, water temperatures, tides, currents, and waves. Armed with this knowledge, they have effectively become an informal lifeguard team, complementing the efforts of professional rescue squads.
Zhao Longjun, a Qingdao resident, proudly shares the heroic deeds of the "Chocolate Grandpas": They are a group that is always ready to lend a helping hand and assist those in need. Whether it's offering directions to lost tourists or responding to distress calls from swimmers in trouble, these remarkable individuals have spent decades mastering the intricacies of Qingdao's coastal waters. They patiently and tirelessly provide safety guidance to visitors from other regions.
While Qingdao's public beaches do have professional rescue teams in place, emergencies such as those involving individuals unaware of tidal patterns or contemplating self-harm sometimes fall outside the purview of formal rescuers. The "Chocolate Grandpas," with their exceptional water skills and profound understanding of the sea, have stepped in to fill this crucial gap. They have not only saved lives but also offered vital psychological support to those in distress and helped retrieve lost belongings, such as keys dropped into the ocean.
