Using a phone while crossing the street may lead to fines

Pedestrians looking at their phones or other electronic devices while crossing the road in Xiamen will receive a warning or a fine of up to 50 yuan, according to a new local regulation. The move is aimed at raising people's awareness of safety and preventing traffic accidents.

Representatives from Xiamen Port and the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) signed an agreement last week establishing a friendly port relationship between the two entities. Xiamen Port has established a total of 17 friendly port relationships with overseas ports.

The World Athletics Federation announced last week that the 11th leg of the Diamond League track and field season will be held in Xiamen on September 2 at Xiamen Egret Stadium (pictured below). Xiamen will be a host city for Diamond League events for ten consecutive years.

The Diamond League consists of a total of 14 one-day meetings that run each year between May and September. Other international host cities include Doha, Oslo and Rome.

Athletes in the Xiamen editions will compete in more than a dozen events. The league attracts the world's highest-ranked athletes in their disciplines, including Olympic champions, world champions and world record holders.

Male athletes will participate in the 100-meter, 400-meter, 800-meeter runs as well as the three-kilometer steeplechase, 110-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Female athletes will compete in the 400-meter, 1500-meter and five-kilometer runs as well as the 400-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump and discuss throw.

The Xiamen International Conference Center recently hosted an announcement conference for the results of the fourth annual China AI Competition. A dozen teams took home A-level certificates and an additional 17 teams earned B-level certificates.

Xiamen authorities last week announced the debut of the Love Umbrella service across the local subway station network. Providers can use kiosks and the 厦门地铁app as well as WeChat or Alipay to borrow umbrellas. The kiosks accept umbrella returns through the same system.

Fortune business magazine recently released its annual list of global top 500 listed companies. Three Xiamen enterprises made the list. The C&D Group earned the 69th place and the ITG Group ranked 95th, while the XMXYG Corporation landed in the 142nd spot.

Local authorities announced recently that Xiamen's Bailufen personal credit mini-program now includes a total of 59 medical institutions participating in the city's credit program for medical services. The system allows participants to take advantage of medical services before completing payment for the services.

Participating institutes include the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University (Xinglin branch), the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University (Siming branch), the Xiamen Children's Hospital, the Xiamen Rehabilitation Hospital and the Xiamen branch of the Zhongshan Hospital (Fudan University).

Xiamen's Lianfu Art Museum recently debuted a new exhibit entitled Lacquer Paintings in the New Era - Lianfu Contemporary Lacquer Painting Nomination Exhibition. Exhibition organizers  include the Chinese Society of Educational Development Strategy, the Association for Student Employment and Xiamen's Bureau of Culture and Tourism.

The exhibit features more than 100 lacquer paintings from across China. The 2023 Xiamen Literary and Art Development Special Fund underwrote the event.

Organizers said that the exhibition is intended to highlight lacquer painting creators and promote the artistic industry. The exhibition is open to the public for free and runs through the end of the month.

The inaugural Xiamen Youth Rock Climbing Open Championship recently launched at the Jimei Yanwu Space Rock Climbing Gym. The Xiamen Rock Climbing Association organized the event. A total of 12 teams and 80 young climbers from Fuzhou, Quanzhou and Xiamen competed in five different groups.

Established in 2017, the Xiamen Rock Climbing Association describes its mission as promoting the sport of rock climbing in Xiamen. It currently features two national-level referees and two former national team members, including a world cup champion and a national champion.

Local Commerce officials announced recently that the inaugural China-Europe (Xiamen) express route out of the local free trade zone area has now carried more than 100,000 TEU of cargo in total. The route broke the milestone earlier this month with the departure of a train from the Xiamen Haicang Station carrying 110 TEU of cargo bound for Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Trade officials described the China-Europe railway express roue as a significant part of the China's Belt and Road initiative.

The route has serviced more than 1,200 outbound trains since its launch in 2015. There are now three international freight routes serviced by Xiamen, including routes with destinations in Europe, Asia and Russia.

The annual China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) opens in Xiamen on September 8. The fair will include the International Investment Forum, secondary forums and a roundtable known as the Gulangyu Forum.

This year's primary forum focuses on investment in China. The fair will also include a Fujian promotion focusing on topics such as green development, intelligent manufacturing and foreign equity investment.

Other major events focusing on global development and international cooperation will include the Silk Road Maritime International Cooperation Forum, the World Business Leaders Roundtable and the RCEP International Cooperation Forum.

The 23rd edition of CIFIT will features 120,000 square meters of exhibition space. Key areas include the Investment Promotion Pavilion, the Industry Innovation Development Pavilion and the Project Capital Docking Pavilion.

The annual Cross-Strait (Xiamen) Cultural Industries Fair wrapped up on Monday at the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center.

The four-day event covered a total exhibition area of 100,000 square meters and featured sections devoted to cultural tourism, arts and crafts, digital media and creative design. Each section included multiple pavilions highlighting areas such as digital culture and tourism and lifestyle amenities and services.

The Xiamen Industrial Exposition came to a close last week. The event drew around 64,000 attendees and nearly 180 professional delegations. Preliminary statistics indicate that participants inked an estimated 420 million yuan in trade deals and intended orders.

Spanning an exhibition area of 73,000 square meters, this year's exposition included multiple theme exhibitions such as the Xiamen Electronics Information Show, the Xiamen Eco-Environment cum Fluid Mechanics Show and the Xiamen Intelligent Transportation and Engineering Machinery Show.

More than 1,000 domestic and international firms showcased approximately 3,000 items and a large variety of brands. The exposition included forums, conferences and business matchmaking sessions.

Exposition organizers noted that the event attracted a significant number of well-known Taiwan enterprises.
