这个depends on学校吧，如果能去stanford的biology department，比去一般州立的
medical school还是要强那么一点的。

I don't know why you think the poster is saying he/she prefers medical
school. A lot of biology department due to their structures (more on plant
biology) will be really hard to apply for NIH R01. How can you tell? Just
look at if anyone of them are funded by NIH. NSF funding these days is bad.
..However, this is not true for Caltech, Stanford, and some of the big name
school.

It is easy to tell. Because the poster was comparing the biology department
in big school and medical school in soso state university.
I am not against any ideas. Just want to know what people think.

state government money is not considered hard money.

Doesn't really matter, big state unversities only get a small proportion of
their operation fund from the state anyway. Also, faculty are under Union
protection.

It's hard to compare. Depend on what university or school that you are
considering.
