Can you apply for "clerk"?
Our career adviser told me for law students working in the firm(not
paralegals) it is just two different ways of calling the same job. And I did
notice most of them would call it associate. Some of them call it clerk.
Good luck to you, too.

I see.
Clerkship to a famous judge is nearly impossible for 1L though. I like to do
clerkship with Judge Posner:)

Actually I have not inquired into and know little about this option. I have
the impression that it is difficult to get a clerkship with any federal
district judge---I just know one lady who clerked with a chief justice of
federal district court here and then secured a partnership with a top100 firm.
It is certainly possible she has other impressive credentials, but that led me
to suspect that kind of clerkship counts a lot and should be highly
competitive, probably more than an associate positio

littletigger, good to have you back... sorry that i mistyped your id.
still one more to go, crim law, on monday.
actually if you have PhD, it's not hard to get clerkship for a fed dist judge
dealing with IP cases, they will love to have you -- check with the career
service at your school. You might also want to try CA, NY, or DC, where most
IP cases are litigated. the down side is that these jobs are free labor.

Actually that was my first choice but somebody already registered it:)
Your semester is long---started early than mine and finishes later. Good luck
with the Crim exam. "What reasonable view(s) of the evidence, if any, would
permit a rational trier of fact to find BARD of each element of the crime?"
I enjoyed the reasonable views of the evidence part---people view the same
evidence so differently.
I still hope to get an associate position first---after so many years of
investment, expectation an

Yes. Getting a well-paid summer associate position is my primary goal, and
that is where I am placing all my bets. I have been staying in school for too
long would like to make some money earlier.
I guess that you worked during the tech boom and you have a husband who is
still working to support you---the other Swingall---as I remembered:)
As I said, if you could work with a famous judge in your area, you probably
can get a one-way ticket to partner in a decent firm, even though you have to

i probably would not put all the eggs in one basket, i.e., betting solely on
working in a firm or working for a judge. maybe try both -- if you get a
paying job, great, defer the judge offer during the semester for an
externship, if you don't get a paying job, then working for a judge so you can
get nice recommendations to big firms.

True. That's why I was asking swingall if she knows the usual deadlines for
clerkships in the courts. It's already hard to send out application for firms
on December 1st. And I didn't have time to ask about the clerkships last time
I talked to our adviser---possibly because that's really not my first choice.
I managed to get about 10 out---many prestigious firms don't consider 1Ls at
all since by now they have usually hired enough 2Ls.
I am hoping that I could get some responses in January and t

So you were a bio-major too:)
It is still early to say there is no jobs for 1L in a firm, your friend will
probably get one. I really don't think the 2Ls have much more advantages than
us---qualitywise---as a patent attorney. The advantage they do have is the OCI
opportunity this fall and the fact that most of the firms focus on them in the
hope of recruiting them next year. But I did hear the result of OCI in our law
school this year wasn't good, a drawback of not being in the top10.

Just a guess and could be mistaken---I indeed missed the word "current" in
your post when I read through it quickly.
But didn't you also take PCAT? So I wonder if you have some kinds of Bio or
Chem background.
Although my guess is you worked with a CS degree before.
