This tradition dates back to June 1923, when the Third CPC National Congress concluded at the Huanghuagang Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery in Guangdong province and the delegates sang The Internationale together in memory of dead revolutionaries.
Qu Qiubai, an early CPC leader and a revolutionary hero, translated the lyrics into Chinese and it was published in Xinqingnian (La Jeunesse), a magazine considered to be at the center of the New Culture Movement, just five days before the congress. Since then, playing The Internationale at the conclusion of the CPC National Congress has become a tradition.
With lyrics by Eugène Pottier and composed by Pierre De Geyter, The Internationale praises the noble ideals and spirit of the soldiers of the Paris Commune. It has been adopted as the anthem of the proletariat and was passed on to China in the 1920s.
When the Third CPC National Congress was held, there were around 420 CPC members in China, now, the number has grown to over 96 million. Throughout the years, The Internationale has remained a beacon of ideals for the CPC members in China.
